Job Title: Medical Assistant – New Providence / West Orange Ortho Job Description
The Medical Assistant supports a busy orthopedic outpatient practice at the West Orange Ortho site, working closely with two physicians, the office supervisor, and a team of medical assistants to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality patient care. This role combines direct patient interaction, clinical support during office procedures, and electronic medical record management in a fast-paced environment that sees a high volume of patients each day.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the office supervisor and other medical assistants to manage and optimize patient flow throughout the clinic.
- Prepare exam rooms and load patient information to ensure readiness for each visit.
- Perform vital sign checks, including manual blood pressure measurements, and document results accurately.
- Room patients, ensure their comfort, and gather necessary information to support the provider’s assessment.
- Assist providers directly in delivering patient care during office visits and procedures.
- Set up and break down rooms and equipment for office-based procedures in accordance with clinical protocols.
- Update provider inboxes within the electronic medical record system and ensure timely follow-up on tasks.
- Scan and upload documents into the electronic medical record (EMR) to maintain complete and accurate patient charts.
- Sterilize instruments according to established infection control and safety standards.
- Update patient charts with current medications and other relevant clinical information.
- Restock exam rooms and supply closets, complete inventory tasks, and ensure all supplies are available and organized.
- Triage phone calls from patients and physicians, addressing questions or routing them appropriately for follow-up.
- Update patient records and input orders into the EMR system with a high level of accuracy.
- Maintain and update the electronic medical record system, including working within Athena and other EMR platforms as needed.
Essential Skills
- At least 6 months of medical assistant experience, preferably in an orthopedic setting.
- Hands-on experience in medical assisting and direct patient care in an outpatient environment.
- Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems; experience with Athena or Epic is strongly preferred, though other EMR experience is acceptable.
- Ability to perform vital sign checks, including manual blood pressure measurement.
- Experience in supporting providers during office procedures, including room preparation and breakdown.
- Strong organizational skills to manage patient flow, room turnover, and supply inventory.
- Effective communication skills for triaging phone calls and interacting with patients and clinical staff.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of relevant medical assistant courses from an accredited school if not certified.
- Customer service skills and strong bedside manner when interacting with patients.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certified Medical Assistant credential is preferred but not required; if certified, the certification must be from an accredited program.
- Orthopedic or podiatry experience is a significant plus.
- Proactive approach to work, with the ability to anticipate needs and take initiative.
- Outgoing and personable demeanor that helps build rapport with patients and colleagues.
- Ability to multitask effectively in a high-volume clinical setting.
- Strong work ethic and reliability in maintaining schedules and responsibilities.
- Problem-solving skills to address issues quickly and support smooth clinic operations.
- Capability to manage patient flow efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Interest in building long-term relationships with patients in an outpatient setting, seeing them on a recurring basis (quarterly, biannually, etc.).
Work Environment
This role is based in an orthopedic outpatient clinic that sees approximately 80–100 patients per day, with two physicians seeing patients concurrently in a fast-paced yet team-oriented environment. The Medical Assistant works closely with clinical leadership and other medical assistants, reporting to a manager within the practice. The schedule is a daytime, weekday shift with hours typically Monday 8:00–5:00, Tuesday 8:00–4:00, Wednesday 7:30–4:00, Thursday 8:00–4:00, and Friday 8:00–4:00. The clinic uses electronic medical record systems, including Athena and potentially other EMR platforms such as Epic, along with standard clinical equipment for vital signs, manual blood pressure, and instrument sterilization. As an outpatient practice, the environment allows for ongoing relationships with patients over time, offering a continuity-of-care experience. The broader organization is part of a large, multi-location healthcare network, providing opportunities for future growth and mobility within the practice and across the organization.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of West Orange, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
