Job Title: Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Job Description
This role offers an excellent opportunity for a construction management or safety graduate to serve as a Safety Representative supporting utility and heavy industrial construction operations. You will act as a trusted safety partner to project leadership and field crews, promoting a strong safety culture through coaching, training, inspections, investigations, compliance support, and continuous improvement initiatives across diverse construction environments, including solar and electrical projects.
Responsibilities
- Act as a visible safety leader and resource for field personnel on utility, industrial, and construction sites.
- Promote and support a strong safety culture by reinforcing company safety policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Build strong working relationships with crews, supervisors, project managers, and clients to encourage proactive safety behaviors.
- Conduct regular safety observations in the field and provide real-time coaching and corrective guidance to address unsafe conditions or behaviors.
- Perform site safety inspections and audits on active construction projects, including heavy industrial and electrical construction sites.
- Identify potential hazards and collaborate with project teams to develop and implement effective risk mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, client requirements, and internal company safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in client safety meetings, audits, and conference calls to represent project safety performance and initiatives.
- Investigate safety incidents, injuries, property damage events, and near misses in a timely and thorough manner.
- Prepare incident reports and required OSHA documentation with clear, accurate, and complete information.
- Conduct root cause analyses of incidents and near misses, and identify appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
- Communicate investigation findings and recommended corrective actions to leadership and field personnel.
- Verify that corrective actions have been implemented, are effective, and are sustained over time.
- Conduct new-hire safety orientations and onboarding activities to ensure employees understand safety expectations and procedures.
- Verify required certifications, licenses, and training records for employees and maintain accurate documentation.
- Support ongoing employee safety education and awareness initiatives, including training sessions and safety campaigns.
- Deliver toolbox talks and safety presentations as needed to field crews and project teams.
- Partner with operations leadership to identify opportunities to improve safety performance and reduce risk.
- Assist with developing, implementing, and supporting safety programs, campaigns, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with regulatory agencies, insurance carriers, and external safety partners.
- Use Microsoft Office applications to prepare reports, track safety metrics, and document inspections and training.
- Travel to project sites throughout the region to conduct inspections, training, and safety support activities.
- Safely access utility, industrial, and construction project environments, including areas with energized electrical work, while adhering to all safety protocols.
Essential Skills
- Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Preferred minimum of 2+ years of safety experience in construction, utility, industrial, energy, or infrastructure environments.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety best practices, including OSHA 30 principles.
- Experience conducting field audits, safety observations, and incident investigations on construction sites.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey safety expectations and findings to diverse audiences.
- Proven relationship-building skills with field crews, supervisors, project managers, and external partners.
- Ability to work independently in fast-paced, field-based environments and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and analysis.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites throughout the region.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions on active construction sites.
- Physical ability to walk, climb, bend, and stand frequently while performing site inspections.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently and correctly.
- Ability to safely access utility, industrial, and construction project environments, including elevated or confined areas as required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience in utility, transmission and distribution, substation, or heavy industrial construction environments.
- Experience supporting energized electrical work environments and understanding associated hazards.
- Professional safety certifications such as CHST, CSP, ASP, OHST, or other relevant safety credentials.
- Background in construction management, construction safety, or safety management, particularly in solar and electrical construction.
- Experience delivering safety training, toolbox talks, and safety presentations to field personnel.
- Familiarity with health and safety regulations and best practices specific to construction and industrial sites.
Work Environment
This position is primarily field-based and involves regular exposure to active construction sites, utility infrastructure, industrial facilities, and outdoor working conditions. You will spend much of your time walking job sites, interacting closely with field crews, and conducting inspections in a variety of weather conditions. The role requires frequent travel to project locations throughout the region, with occasional overnight travel based on project needs. You will work in environments that may include heavy industrial operations, solar installations, electrical construction, and energized electrical work areas, where strict adherence to safety protocols and the consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) are essential.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Edwardsville, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
