The Production Engineer plays a key role in introducing new products into manufacturing, optimizing production processes, and driving continuous improvement across electromechanical and electronic assembly operations. This position focuses on ensuring a smooth transition from design to production, reducing costs, improving quality, and providing ongoing technical support to the production floor in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the New Product Introduction (NPI) process for new products, collaborating closely with design, engineering, quality, and operations teams to ensure a smooth transition from design to full-scale production.
- Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews and provide clear, actionable feedback to design teams to optimize product designs for efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing.
- Develop, document, and maintain manufacturing processes, work instructions, and routings for new products, ensuring alignment with quality and applicable regulatory standards.
- Identify and implement cost reduction initiatives in production processes and materials, contributing to departmental objectives related to efficiency and profitability.
- Lead continuous improvement activities using Lean manufacturing principles to enhance process efficiency, reduce waste, and improve overall product quality and throughput.
- Analyze production data and metrics such as CPI, SPI, and quality indices to identify trends, areas for improvement, and opportunities for process optimization.
- Provide day-to-day technical support to the production floor, resolving build issues, troubleshooting problems, and implementing timely corrective actions to maintain stable production flow.
- Develop and optimize assembly processes for hardware, including PCB assembly and wiring harnesses, ensuring robust, repeatable, and scalable operations.
- Create and maintain detailed documentation of production processes, including standard operating procedures, test procedures, and quality control records.
- Support preproduction builds, analyze build results, and identify potential production risks and improvement opportunities before full-scale launch.
- Collaborate with suppliers to ensure component readiness, quality, and reliability for both preproduction and production phases.
- Assist in qualification, acceptance, and performance testing for new and modified systems to confirm they meet functional and quality requirements.
- Work effectively with cross-functional teams such as production, quality, design, and procurement to achieve project milestones and operational goals.
- Communicate clearly and concisely with technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment on requirements, risks, and project status.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Several years of experience as a Production Engineer in a volume electromechanical assembly or related manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for hardware, including PCB assembly and wiring harnesses.
- Hands-on experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) processes and associated methodologies such as Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
- Knowledge of cost reduction strategies and Lean manufacturing principles, with practical experience applying them in a production setting.
- Experience with quality control measures, including developing and following test procedures and maintaining quality records.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose complex production issues and implement effective solutions.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively as part of a cross-functional team.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
- Familiarity with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES).
- Experience using 3D CAD software to support design and manufacturing activities.
- Experience working in high-volume production environments.
- Background in electromechanical assembly and electronic manufacturing.
- Comfort with analyzing production metrics such as CPI, SPI, and quality indices to support data-driven decision-making.
Work Environment
This role operates in a high-volume electromechanical and electronic manufacturing environment focused on PCB assembly, wiring harnesses, and related hardware production. The Production Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams on the production floor and in engineering offices, using tools such as PLM and MES systems, 3D CAD software, and standard manufacturing documentation. The environment emphasizes collaboration, continuous improvement, and adherence to quality standards, with a strong focus on efficient processes, data-driven decision-making, and clear communication across departments.

This is a Contract position based out of Overland Park, KS.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $60.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
