The Production Pharmacist works under the direction of the Pharmacy Director and partners closely with Sterile and Non-Sterile Production Managers to oversee the preparation of compounded sterile and non-sterile medications. This role ensures strict compliance with state and federal regulations, internal policies, and compounding standards while supporting prescription dispensing operations during the shift. The Production Pharmacist provides direct patient care, including counseling on compounded, prescription, and over-the-counter medications, and contributes to the delivery of high-quality, patient-specific pharmaceutical solutions.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and ensure that all compounded sterile and non-sterile preparations are accurate and fully compliant with master formula worksheets.
- Verify that cleaning and garbing procedures are performed according to established company policies and compounding standards.
- Perform dosage calculations and complete all required production and clinical documentation with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Operate all production equipment correctly and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Apply correct and appropriate aseptic techniques and thoroughly prepare work areas prior to production activities.
- Operate and monitor technical, computerized equipment to ensure that quality standards for compounded products are consistently maintained.
- Ensure the quality, purity, and potency of all compounded medications produced within the pharmacy.
- Conduct quality control tests and inspections to confirm the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of compounded preparations.
- Stay current with new compounding techniques, formulations, and technologies, and incorporate best practices into daily operations.
- Engage in continuous learning and professional development related to sterile and non-sterile compounding pharmacy practices.
- Ensure proper technique, accurate preparation, precise documentation, and full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations for all pharmaceutical products dispensed.
- Adhere to all Standard Operating Procedures and company policies and guidelines as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Support the maintenance of the pharmacy’s licensure and accreditation related to compounding activities.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, including physicians and veterinarians, to develop appropriate compounded medications tailored to individual patients.
- Work closely with pharmacy technicians and other staff members to efficiently and accurately fulfill prescription orders.
- Assist with the shipping and handling of prescription orders when needed to ensure timely and correct delivery.
- Ensure prescription orders are processed according to the specific requirements and requests of prescribers and patients.
- Provide patient care by assessing patient demographics, reviewing and maintaining medication histories, and evaluating patient medication profiles.
- Develop patient care plans by establishing desired therapeutic outcomes, determining appropriate alternatives, and monitoring patient progress.
- Educate patients on their drug therapy, including appropriateness of use, dosage form, regimen, route, potential therapeutic duplication, and possible drug interactions.
- Monitor ongoing drug therapy to evaluate the appropriateness of medications, dosage forms, regimens, routes, therapeutic duplication, and drug interactions.
- Communicate effectively with patients, nurses, physicians, and co-workers to ensure all prescription information is complete, accurate, and clearly understood.
- Counsel patients on prescription and over-the-counter medications, nutritional supplements, and related therapies to promote safe and effective use.
Essential Skills
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree.
- Active Pennsylvania pharmacist license.
- At least 1 year of experience in compounding pharmacy, including sterile or non-sterile compounding.
- Demonstrated experience preparing compounded sterile and non-sterile medications in compliance with regulatory and quality standards.
- Strong knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations related to sterile and non-sterile compounding.
- Ability to perform accurate pharmaceutical calculations and maintain precise documentation.
- Proficiency with intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work with The Compounder (PK software product) for compounding-related tasks.
- Knowledge of third-party billing processes and requirements.
- Ability to use standard office equipment, including photocopier, fax machine, and telephone.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with patients, prescribers, veterinary professionals, nurses, and pharmacy staff.
- Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures and adhere to company policies and guidelines.
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of quality, purity, and potency in compounded medications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a PCAB, ACHC, or URAC accredited compounding pharmacy environment.
- Familiarity with QS-1 pharmacy management software (preferred but not required).
- Understanding of HIPAA, OSHA, and other regulatory standards relevant to pharmacy practice and compounding.
- Experience collaborating with physicians, veterinarians, and other healthcare professionals to develop patient-specific compounded therapies.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in sterile and non-sterile compounding techniques, formulations, and technologies.
- Ability to engage in patient counseling on over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, and nutritional supplements.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple prescriptions, documentation requirements, and quality control activities.
- Ability to contribute to maintaining pharmacy licensure and accreditation related to compounding activities.
Work Environment
This position is based in a specialized compounding pharmacy that focuses on creating custom medications for people, pets, horses, and zoo animals. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to regulatory standards and accreditation requirements, including those related to compounding quality and patient safety. You will work with sterile and non-sterile compounding technologies, technical computerized equipment, and software tools such as The Compounder and potentially QS-1, alongside standard office equipment like photocopiers, fax machines, and telephones. The pharmacy culture is centered on delivering high-quality, patient-specific solutions, maintaining compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations, and supporting ongoing professional development in advanced compounding practices.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kennett Square, PA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $62.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
