We are looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Commodity Taxe Manager to join our Tax team. Reporting to the Director, Commodity Taxes Planning, Policies & Procedures, you will serve as a strategic advisor on complex indirect tax matters affecting Air Canada and its subsidiaries. In this role, you will drive tax governance, support key business and transformation initiatives, manage risk, and collaborate with stakeholders across Finance, Legal, Procurement, IT, and Operations to deliver practical and value-added tax solutions.

Responsibilities:

Tax advisory, planning and risk management

- Act as a subject matter expert on Canadian and U.S. commodity taxes, including GST/HST, QST, provincial sales taxes, U.S. sales and use taxes, excise taxes, and other transaction-based taxes relevant to airline operations.
- Provide clear, business-oriented advice on new products, commercial arrangements, operational changes, business expansion, and other strategic initiatives.
- Identify tax planning and recovery opportunities while assessing and mitigating tax risk.
- Interpret legislation, regulations, administrative guidance, and jurisprudence, and translate technical requirements into practical recommendations.
- Proactively communicate the financial and operational impacts of significant transactions, projects, and legislative developments to the Director and relevant stakeholders.

Governance, compliance and audits

- Develop, maintain, and improve tax policies, procedures, controls, decision frameworks, and documentation standards to support consistent compliance.
- Partner with the Commodity Tax Compliance team on audits, inquiries, voluntary disclosures, refund claims, and information requests from Canadian and U.S. tax authorities.
- Lead the resolution of complex tax issues and coordinate complete, accurate, and timely responses with internal teams, external advisors, and government authorities.
- Monitor legislative and administrative developments, assess their impact, and lead implementation of required changes across affected processes and systems.
- Support strong audit trails, data integrity, and control evidence for tax positions, filings, and recoveries.

Contracts, systems and business partnership

- Review sales, purchase, service, and commercial agreements to confirm appropriate tax treatment, clauses, invoicing, and documentation requirements.
- Collaborate closely with Finance, Revenue Accounting, Procurement, Legal, IT, Commercial, and operational teams to embed tax requirements in business processes.
- Provide tax leadership for system and data initiatives (new implementations, enhancements, integrations, testing, and data remediation/quality, including transaction mapping and reporting requirements).
- Identify and deliver process improvements and responsible automation opportunities that improve accuracy, efficiency, control, and stakeholder experience.
- Develop and facilitate training, technical guidance, job aids, and awareness sessions for Tax colleagues and business partners.

Qualifications

- Degree in Business, Finance or Law or completed accounting designation.
- Commodity tax coursework or a graduate tax degree is an asset.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the commodity tax field, including significant Canadian experience and practical exposure to U.S. sales and use taxes.
- Advanced knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial commodity tax legislation, including GST/HST, QST, provincial sales taxes, and excise taxes.
- Working knowledge of U.S. state and local sales and use taxes; experience with sales tax compliance requirements across multiple jurisdictions is an asset.
- Ability to interpret complex legislation, exercise sound judgment, and provide clear and concise recommendations in ambiguous or time-sensitive situations.
- Strong project leadership, analytical, organizational and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
- Excellent written and verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tax matters to non-tax audiences and work effectively across teams.
- Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.
