Senior Software Engineer, Consumer Payments

Japan team features a sophisticated financial ecosystem with high-density transit/e-money networks, QR code systems, and complex loyalty programs. Our mission is to seamlessly integrate these rails into everyday user journeys across Google products.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Consumer Payments Japan team in Tokyo, you will lead the technical architecture, design, and end-to-end delivery of distributed back-end services powering hyper-local payment and loyalty experiences. You will drive multi-quarter engineering initiatives to enable simple, secure, and intelligent consumer payment solutions. You will be partnering with Product Management, UX, Business Development, and global engineering teams. You will translate complex local market requirements into globally scalable platform architectures. You will be working in a collaborative environment leveraging AI-assisted development workflows, and will serve as a key technical leader.
Whether it is paying online with Autofill, using tap and pay in stores, or using the Google Pay app, the Payments team at Google is focused on making payments simple, seamless, and secure. In addition to consumer payment technologies, the Payments team also powers the money movement between Google and its consumers and businesses.

Minimum qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.

- 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java).

- 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

- Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.

- 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role.

- Domain experience in one or more of the following: consumer payments, card tokenization, issuer integration, eWallets, QR code payment protocols, or large-scale loyalty/rewards platforms.

- Strong experience designing distributed systems with idempotent APIs, and building cross-product integrations that connect back-end payment/loyalty engines to consumer surfaces (e.g., Mobile Wallet, Search, Maps, or Web checkout).

- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with external technical partners and drive technical consensus across globally distributed teams.

- Lead the architectural design, implementation, and deployment of high-availability backend microservices and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) powering payment flows.

- Partner with external Japanese financial institutions and loyalty providers to define technical specifications, security protocols, and API agreement.

- Advocate for modern AI-accelerated software engineering practices to enhance code quality, automated test coverage, and development velocity across the team.

- Drive end-to-end project execution across multi-site engineering teams, conduct thorough design and code reviews, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
