General Description and Classification Standards:
The Database Administrator I plans, maintains, and supports computerized databases including definition, structure, documentation, long ‑ range requirements, operational guidelines, and protection. This is an intermediate ‑ level professional role capable of carrying out most assignments typical of the profession with limited guidance or review. This level would be considered a promotional level and attainable by incumbents who demonstrate the necessary knowledge, ability, and performance. The role may be the only professional in this specialty within a work group.
Within Public Safety & Justice (PSJ), this role ensures the stability, availability, and integrity of underlying databases and integrations that support time ‑ sensitive public safety operations, investigative processes, and inter ‑ agency coordination.
Supervision Received:
Performs work under general supervision with review and advice from a manager or senior ‑ level professional.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Ensure accuracy and completeness of data in master files, dictionaries, and support tools.
- Establish and maintain database security and integrity controls.
- Formulate and monitor policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management.
- Install, configure, and maintain the performance of database servers.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot database errors and performance issues.
- Set and maintain database standards and documentation.
- Manage database user accounts and access permissions.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and remediate failed database backup jobs.
- Work with developers to diagnose and resolve database ‑ related issues.
- Provide backend database support for operational systems used by law enforcement, fire, corrections, emergency communications, and oversight agencies.
- Ensure continuous availability and performance of databases supporting incident ‑ driven workflows and time ‑ critical public safety activities.
- Validate data and maintain consistency across interconnected systems and integrations supporting PSJ operations.
- Troubleshoot backend issues involving system integrations, data flows, and multi ‑ vendor components.
- Implement secure data access, auditing, and controls aligned with regulations governing criminal justice and emergency response information.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to resolve database or integration issues.
- Maintain situational awareness of database/system health and proactively identify risks that could impact public safety operations or inter ‑ agency coordination.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

- Knowledge of database concepts, tools, processes, and security controls.
- Understanding of data structures and related information system disciplines.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot issues across databases and interconnected systems.
- Skill in interpersonal communication and presenting technical information effectively.
- Ability to apply professional experience to support mission ‑ critical, multi ‑ disciplinary PSJ workflows.
- Proficiency in SQL, including writing, optimizing, and troubleshooting queries for operational and analytical needs.
- Experience with the Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) to support automation, data workflows, and reporting within PSJ environments.
- Scripting and coding experience with PowerShell, Python, or R for automation, data validation, system integrations, and troubleshooting.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience -
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Computer Science, or related field and three (3) years of specific professional work experience in database administration or design.
Licensures and Certifications - None required.
Preferred Requirements - Master’s Degree in Business, Computer Science, or related field and four (4) years of directly related professional database experience.
