The Assistant Project Manager supports the successful delivery of large, complex construction projects, with a strong focus on pharmaceutical environments. This role provides leadership across pre-construction, planning, and active construction phases, ensuring projects meet schedule, budget, quality, and safety objectives. The Assistant Project Manager collaborates closely with field project managers, general contractors, owners, engineers, architects, and subcontractors to drive project success and maintain strong professional relationships.
Responsibilities
- Provide strong leadership to support field project managers, general contractors, and owners, and nurture effective relationships that contribute to project success.
- Manage pre-construction and preplanning activities, including developing and maintaining construction project schedules.
- Leverage relationships with general contractors and subcontractors to support project timelines and budgets.
- Take ownership and accountability for projects under your direction, ensuring alignment with project goals and company standards.
- Actively participate as a member of the project team to solve complex problems related to project schedules and budgets.
- Review and approve project budgets, including labor, materials, and subcontractors, and determine allocation of manpower, equipment, and materials from start to finish within budgetary limitations.
- Negotiate and prepare subcontractor contracts with external vendors to reach agreements that are beneficial to the project.
- Manage project finances, including monitoring profitability and cash flow, and implementing monthly cost reports and accurate cost projections.
- Oversee and provide indirect leadership to construction crews, ensuring coordination between office and field operations.
- Participate in design conflict resolution for all trades by collaborating with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to clarify specifications and resolve issues.
- Lead strategic planning efforts and manage the project submittal, request for information (RFI), and change order processes.
- Identify, recognize, and resubmit change orders as necessary to ensure proper documentation and cost recovery.
- Review and approve supplier and subcontractor invoices, ensuring accuracy and adherence to contract terms.
- Ensure adherence to all health and safety standards on projects and promptly report any issues or concerns.
- Project, identify, and manage CAD, fabrication, and field labor resources required to execute the work efficiently.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Provide direct oversight and coordination for subcontractors and ensure their work meets project requirements.
- Provide indirect oversight for internal field personnel and support services, fostering collaboration and effective communication.
- Provide direct guidance and support to project engineers and/or other assistant project managers.
- Train estimating staff on the technical aspects of project management to improve project planning and execution.
- Coordinate daily with the superintendent to align company resource production capabilities with construction activities.
- Professionally solicit vendors and suppliers during the procurement process to secure materials and services that meet project specifications.

- Ability to negotiate and draft subcontractor contracts and manage vendor relationships.
- In-depth understanding of construction procedures, materials, and project management principles.
- Ability to identify, plan, and manage CAD, fabrication, and field labor resources.
- Proficiency in leading and participating in design conflict resolution with engineers, architects, and other technical stakeholders.
- Experience with change order management, including recognition, documentation, and resubmission.
- Capability to implement monthly cost reports and accurate cost projections.
- Consistent dependability and availability to support project demands.
- Bachelors degree from a four-year college or university; or 10+ years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience leading large multi-million-dollar complex construction projects, preferably a minimum of 4 years.
- Pharmaceutical (pharma) project experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Construction Management, Construction Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a similar discipline is highly preferred.
- Experience working on pharmaceutical projects or within highly regulated construction environments.
- Strong skills with Bluebeam software are highly valued.
- Experience using Procore or similar construction management platforms is highly valued.
- Ability to train and mentor estimating staff on technical aspects of project management.
- Experience with pipe systems and related mechanical construction work.
- Demonstrated ability to professionally solicit vendors and suppliers during the procurement process.
- Familiarity with health and safety standards applicable to construction projects, particularly in specialized environments such as pharmaceutical facilities.
Work Environment
The role operates primarily within a fast-paced construction office environment that supports pharmaceutical (pharma) projects. You will collaborate closely with field teams, superintendents, engineers, architects, and subcontractors to coordinate work in active construction settings. The projects involve complex mechanical and pipe systems and require strict adherence to health, safety, and quality standards commonly associated with pharmaceutical facilities. You will use construction management technologies such as Bluebeam and Procore or similar platforms, as well as CAD and other project planning tools, to manage documentation, schedules, budgets, and communication. The work environment emphasizes maintaining safe and clean work areas, enforcing procedures, rules, and regulations, and ensuring smooth coordination between office and field operations.

This is a Permanent position based out of Apex, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $105000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
