Structural Steel Quality Inspector – 1st Shift

Shift: 1st Shift
Starting Pay: Up to $32/hour, depending on experience
Position Summary
Seeking a Quality Inspector with hands-on structural steel fabrication experience to verify materials, welding, coatings, and finished components meet project specifications and applicable industry standards.
This is primarily a shop-floor position in an active manufacturing environment with limited office work. The facility is non-climate-controlled, so candidates should be comfortable working in varying temperatures and being on their feet throughout the day.
What You'll Do
- Inspect structural steel fabrication, welds, materials, and coatings for quality and specification compliance.
- Verify work against AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, AISC , and other applicable standards.
- Check incoming materials, parts, and welding consumables for conformance.
- Identify and document materials and inspection results according to established procedures.
- Maintain QC logs, inspection records, and related documentation.
- Calibrate and maintain welding equipment and inspection tools.
- Support welder qualification, testing, and certification activities.
- Assist with training involving welding, fitting, and quality requirements.
- Maintain drawing control and other quality-related processes.
- Work directly with production and management to investigate and resolve quality concerns.
- Participate in continuous improvement and training activities.
- Promote safe work practices throughout the fabrication operation.
Required Qualifications
- At least 2 years of structural steel fabrication experience .
- Previous quality control, inspection, or manufacturing experience.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC standards.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and specifications.
- Experience using inspection and measuring equipment, including:
Fillet weld gauges
- V-WAC gauges
- Squares
- Tape measures
- Other standard QC inspection tools
- Able to work independently with limited supervision.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality and workplace safety.
Preferred Experience
- Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Experience with nondestructive testing (NDT), including:
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Additional certifications involving structural steel fabrication, bolting, coatings, or welding inspection.
- Previous experience in a steel manufacturing or fabrication environment.
Work Environment
- Primarily based on the production floor with limited office work.
- Active manufacturing environment.
- Non-climate-controlled facility with exposure to changing temperatures.
- Requires frequent standing, walking, and inspection of materials throughout the shift.
