Job Title: Phlebotomist Job Description This Phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and processing services in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, manage specimen handling and storage, support laboratory workflows, and assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement recommendations to ensure accurate and timely results for patients and clinicians. Responsibilities

- Perform blood draws (venipuncture) independently using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced environment.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens (such as urine or fecal samples) according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the order or script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Prepare and package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimens at the required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow specific protocols for specimen handling, management, and storage to support laboratory, blood bank, and biobank requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination activities as required to support laboratory operations.
- Update patient information accurately and perform data entry related to patient specimens and laboratory orders.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory result information when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and safety standards.
- Assist in troubleshooting workflow issues, participate in training activities, and make recommendations to improve work processes.

Essential Skills

- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
- Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws on a pediatric through geriatric patient population.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including venipuncture and blood draw techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen handling, specimen management, sample preparation, sample storage, and specimen storage.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and package specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Competence in working within a laboratory or clinical setting, including handling blood samples and other biological specimens.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to accurately update patient information and perform data entry related to patient specimens and test orders.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following safety and regulatory procedures.
- Strong attention to detail, especially when matching requisitions to specimens and verifying labels and orders.
- Effective communication skills to clearly explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries by phone.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- High school diploma and/or GED completion.
- Phlebotomy certification is not required but experience in phlebotomy is essential.
- Experience working with pediatric, adult, and geriatric patient populations in a clinical or laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory workflows, blood bank or biobank environments, and biological sample handling.
- Experience using a centrifuge and other standard laboratory equipment.
- Exposure to or familiarity with Cerner or other electronic systems is beneficial.
- Experience in medical assisting or related clinical support roles is an advantage.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining accuracy and quality in specimen collection and processing.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
