About this role
Role Overview
The General Manager, Reservoir Engineering, will provide strategic, technical, commercial, and organizational leadership for the reservoir engineering function of a new upstream oil and gas company. The role will be responsible for building and leading a high-performing reservoir engineering organization, establishing fit-for-purpose workflows and processes, supporting the creation of an operating model, and ensuring that reservoir management, development optimization, reserves, economics, and commercial inputs are integrated into high-quality investment and operating decisions. The role will lead reservoir and development optimization for the South Mansfield asset while serving as a key technical leader in the identification, evaluation, acquisition, and integration of upstream opportunities for conventional and unconventional plays in the United States and globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the reservoir engineering function across reservoir management, field development planning, production forecasting, reserves and resource assessment, and completion and development optimization for conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources.
- Build, organize, and develop a multidisciplinary reservoir engineering team, including defining roles, accountabilities, governance interfaces, technical assurance processes, and capability development priorities.
- Create practical workflows, processes, data standards, peer reviews, and decision frameworks required to stand up a new upstream company and enable consistent evaluation, planning, and investment recommendations.
- Support the design and implementation of the company's upstream operating model, including interfaces with subsurface, drilling and completions, operations, commercial, legal, finance, business development, and executive leadership.
- Lead integrated development optimization for the South Mansfield asset, including well spacing and stacking, landing-zone selection, drilling sequence, lateral length, completion design, parent-child and depletion effects, and surveillance and data-acquisition planning.
- Own type curves, production forecasts, reserves inputs, uncertainty ranges, and performance lookbacks, applying material balance, rate- and pressure-transient analysis, decline-curve analysis, and numerical simulation as appropriate.
- Provide technical and commercial leadership for opportunity screening, technical due diligence, valuation, portfolio prioritization, asset maturation, and post-acquisition integration for acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and farm-ins worldwide.
- Lead reserves and resource evaluation consistent with applicable SEC and SPE-PRMS requirements, coordinate with independent reserves auditors, and maintain auditable forecast, reserves, and economic assumptions.
- Direct well, project, asset, and portfolio level economics, including NPV, IRR, payout, breakeven, scenario, and sensitivity analysis, and provide production and supply forecasts supporting integrated gas, LNG, and corporate planning decisions.
- Integrate geoscience, engineering, operations, economics, commercial terms, regulatory considerations, and stakeholder inputs into decision-quality recommendations.
- Lead or support the engagement, contracting, and management of consultants, third-party engineering firms, technical software providers, and related budgets while retaining clear internal ownership of assumptions and decisions.
- Represent the company in technical, commercial, and partner discussions with counterparties, service providers, joint venture participants, government entities, and other external stakeholders.
- Establish a collaborative and accountable team culture suited to an international, multicultural company operating across multiple jurisdictions and business environments, and champion HSE, ethics, and compliance standards in all technical and investment activities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 20 years of experience in the oil and gas sector, with substantial exposure to upstream reservoir engineering, asset development, and business decision-making.
- Demonstrated experience in reservoir engineering fundamentals, including reservoir characterization, forecasting, reserves and resource estimation, uncertainty and risk analysis, and project economics applied to appraisal, development, and field optimization decisions.
- Demonstrated experience in development planning for conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources, including substantial shale oil or gas development experience covering well performance, spacing and interference analysis, with a focus on completion optimization.
- Proven ability to connect technical reservoir analysis with commercial outcomes, including opportunity screening, portfolio evaluation, business case development, or investment recommendations.
- Experience supporting acquisitions or other transactions, including data-room due diligence, developing input data for valuation, risk assessment, and supporting communication of conclusions to decision makers.
- Demonstrated experience building, leading, and developing technical teams, including assigning ownership, creating accountability, developing talent, and improving team effectiveness.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder-management skills, with demonstrated ability to work effectively in an international and multicultural company.
- Ability to operate in ambiguous or newly formed organizational environments, define structure, create processes, and translate strategic objectives into executable workflows.
- Bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally; legal authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master or Ph.D. in petroleum engineering, geology, or earth science.
- Direct Haynesville or Bossier experience and familiarity with dry-gas development and Gulf Coast LNG market linkages.
- Experience in complex international operating environments is strongly preferred.
- Experience working with national oil companies, governments, joint venture partners, industrial customers, or strategic counterparties.
- Experience supporting the formation, scaling, or transformation of an upstream business, technical function, or new operating organization.
- Proficiency with reservoir and production-analysis tools such as Harmony Enterprise, KAPPA, ComboCurve, CMG, tNavigator, or ResFrac, and with economic tools such as ARIES or PhDWin; working knowledge of analytics platforms such as Enverus, Spotfire, Power BI, Python, or SQL.
- Registered Professional Engineer or active participation in SPE or a comparable professional organization.
Role Outlook and Success Profile
The successful candidate will be a hands-on reservoir engineering leader who can move comfortably between technical detail, commercial judgment, organizational design, and executive-level communication. This individual will be expected to help stand up the reservoir engineering capability of a new upstream company by creating clear ways of working, building a capable and motivated team, and ensuring that reservoir and development insights are translated into practical business decisions. The role requires a leader who can work across cultures, functions, and external relationships while bringing structure, credibility, and disciplined decision-making to a growing upstream organization.
