Senior Lighting Engineer

Overview

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Lighting Engineer to join our team and lead the delivery of external lighting design packages for major infrastructure and highways projects across the UK.

The successful candidate will possess extensive experience in UK external lighting design, a strong understanding of current British Standards and industry guidance, and expertise in delivering safe, sustainable, and cost-effective lighting solutions. This role requires both technical excellence and leadership capability, including mentoring junior engineers and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.

Your Role

Lighting Design & Engineering

- Lead the design and delivery of external lighting systems from concept through detailed design and construction support.
- Develop lighting layouts, photometric assessments, and lighting control strategies for highways, public realm, and infrastructure projects.
- Undertake lighting calculations using Lighting Reality. Experience with DIALux and AGi32 is desirable.
- Perform electrical load and power calculations using Amtech.
- Prepare lighting layouts, Schematics and wiring diagrams, standard details, Schedules as per MCHW, specifications, design report, Design risk assesment.
- Develop designs in accordance with MCHW requirements and relevant client standards.
- Ensure compliance with applicable UK standards and industry guidance, including BS5489, BS13201, BS 12464-2, ILP guidelines, BS EN 40, BS7671 and BS7430.
- Deliver passive-safe lighting column designs in accordance with BS EN 12767 and TR30 requirements.
- Promote low-carbon design principles and energy-efficient lighting solutions through the application of modern technologies and smart control systems.

Technical Leadership & Coordination

- Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior and intermediate engineers.
- Review and approve lighting calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including Higways, Geotech,Drainage, Structures, Technology and Local authorities.
- Liaise with local authorities, stakeholders, and clients to obtain design approvals and ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Participate in design reviews, project meetings, planning submissions, and client presentations.
- Support project planning, resource allocation, and programme management to ensure successful project delivery.

About You

- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in electrical and external lighting design, with significant experience delivering projects within the UK.
- Demonstrated knowledge of UK highways and infrastructure lighting design standards and regulations.
- Strong understanding of Electrical distribution systems, Earthing and bonding, Lighting controls and Energy-efficient design solutions
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Lighting Reality and Amtech.
- Experience with DIALux, AGi32, BIM workflows, and Civil 3D would be advantageous.
- Experience delivering lighting and electrical packages for UK highways, local authority, or infrastructure projects.
- Strong technical and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Sound engineering judgement and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven client-facing and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
- Commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborative and proactive approach to multidisciplinary project delivery.
- Experience working on National Highways, local authority, or major infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of sustainable and low-carbon lighting design practices.
- Understanding of asset management and whole-life cost considerations.
- Working toward or holding professional accreditation such as IEng or CEng through a relevant professional institution.
- 7+ years in UK External Lighting Design
