Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 – 15:30

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Contractor Supervising Officer to join our waste management team at our Filton, Bristol site. This is a critical supervisory role overseeing the safe collection and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste via tanker and skip operations, ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

As the CSO, you will function as the primary point of contact for waste contractors, managing all aspects of tanker and skip operations including scheduling, site access, road closures, and ensuring strict adherence to waste handling procedures. Your expertise will be essential in maintaining operational safety and regulatory compliance across all waste removal activities

What your day to day will look like

Contractor Supervision and Management To supervise waste contractors during tanker and skip operations for both hazardous and non-hazardous waste collection. This includes conducting safety briefings, monitoring contractor activities, ensuring compliance with site rules and permit-to-work systems, and acting as the authoritative site representative throughout all waste uplift operations.

Road Closure Coordination To plan, arrange and manage temporary road closures required for safe tanker and skip collection vehicle access and positioning. Coordinating with site operations, communicating with affected departments, implementing appropriate traffic management measures and ensuring minimal disruption to site activities whilst maintaining safety standards.

Waste Verification and Compliance Before any waste leaves site you will verify that all materials are correctly identified, classified and labelled in accordance with regulatory requirements and waste transfer documentation. Inspect waste collected from buildings and loaded into skips ensuring proper segregation and labelling preventing non-compliant materials from entering the waste stream.

Health and Safety Leadership You will conduct risk assessments for tanker and skip operations, implement control measures, and ensure all activities are conducted safely. This includes monitoring for potential hazards, enforcing the use of appropriate PPE, and stopping work immediately if unsafe conditions are identified.

Building Collection Oversight, you will oversee the collection of waste from various buildings across the site, ensuring waste operatives follow correct procedures for handling, labelling, and transporting materials. You will inspect collection points to verify compliance with waste segregation requirements.

Communication and Coordination Acting as the liaison between contractors, site management, waste operatives, and other stakeholders, you will ensure clear communication of schedules, requirements, and any operational changes. You will escalate issues promptly and work collaboratively to resolve problems efficiently.

Emergency Response In the event of spills, leaks, or other incidents during waste operations, you will coordinate the immediate response, ensure appropriate containment measures are implemented, and manage reporting procedures in accordance with site protocols.

Essential Requirements

Proven experience in waste management operations, particularly supervising contractor activities including tanker and skip operations involving hazardous materials. Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations, classification systems (EWC codes), and waste transfer documentation is essential. Experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or large-scale facilities environment is highly desirable.

Technical Knowledge Strong understanding of health and safety requirements for hazardous waste handling, including COSHH assessments, permit-to-work systems, and emergency response procedures. Familiarity with environmental legislation and duty of care obligations for waste producers is required.

Leadership and Communication Skills Excellent supervisory capabilities with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices and enforce compliance. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to consult effectively with contractors, management, and operational teams. Experience managing multiple tasks simultaneously and making decisions under pressure.

Organisational Abilities Exceptional diligence with the ability to plan and coordinate complex operations involving multiple stakeholders. Strong administrative skills for maintaining accurate records and documentation. Ability to anticipate potential issues and implement initiative-taking solutions.

Licenses and Certifications Relevant health and safety qualifications such as IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent are desirable. Any specific waste management qualifications (e.g., WAMITAB) would be advantageous. Computer literacy for documentation and reporting purposes is required.

Personal Attributes You must be assertive, confident, and able to maintain authority when supervising contractors and enforcing safety standards. A methodical approach, strong problem-solving abilities, and the resilience to work in challenging outdoor conditions are essential. Reliability and punctuality are critical.

Availability You must be available to work the fixed shift pattern of 07:00 to 15:30, Monday to Friday,

with the flexibility to adapt to operational demands when necessary.
