About the Role
We are seeking a Principal Field Service Engineer to serve as a senior technical expert for advanced equipment installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and customer support.
This role is ideal for an experienced field service professional who enjoys solving complex technical problems, working directly with customers, mentoring other engineers, and partnering with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to improve equipment reliability and service processes.
The Principal Field Service Engineer acts as a key technical escalation point and supports advanced systems in customer, laboratory, manufacturing, and technical environments.
What Youll Do
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance at customer sites.
- Lead equipment installation, commissioning, and final system acceptance .
- Troubleshoot and repair complex mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, and system-level issues.
- Provide technical support through on-site visits, phone, and email .
- Serve as a senior technical escalation point for advanced or recurring equipment issues.
- Lead root cause analysis and help drive corrective actions.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with customers throughout service activities.
- Complete service reports, work orders, and technical documentation accurately and on time.
- Develop and improve service procedures, troubleshooting guides, protocols, and technical documentation .
- Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain to improve product performance and reliability.
- Provide technical training and guidance to customers, field engineers, and internal teams.
- Mentor less experienced field service engineers and support technical skill development.
- Provide input on service strategy, tools, spare parts, and process improvements.
- Support continuous improvement efforts that increase service efficiency and customer satisfaction.
What Were Looking For
- Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree; 3 years with a Masters degree; a PhD; or equivalent relevant experience .
- Experience servicing, maintaining, installing, or troubleshooting complex technical equipment.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, procedures, and equipment specifications.
- Experience managing technical issues from initial diagnosis through resolution.
- Strong customer communication and technical support skills.
- Ability to work independently at customer locations and manage complex field service situations.
- Experience serving as a technical resource, mentor, or escalation point is strongly preferred.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is a hybrid field service position based in Boulder, Colorado , with work performed in office, laboratory, manufacturing, and customer-site environments.
The role requires:
- Extensive domestic travel
- Occasional international travel
- Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and working around technical equipment
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing approximately 40–80 pounds
- Team lifting or mechanical assistance for heavier equipment
- Work in laboratories, customer facilities, cleanrooms, controlled environments, or confined spaces as required
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position in Boulder, Colorado is $75,000–$98,700 per year , depending on experience, technical skills, education, and qualifications.
