Role Overview
Role Purpose
The Equipment Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and coordination of maintenance activities across the Bedlington Resistors business unit.
The role ensures that production equipment, plant infrastructure and site utilities are maintained safely, effectively and in accordance with agreed maintenance plans and operational priorities. The Maintenance Supervisor provides direct leadership to the maintenance technicians and apprentices, allocating work, coordinating the response to equipment breakdowns and ensuring planned maintenance is completed to the required safety, quality and technical standards.
Working closely with the Equipment Maintenance Manager and Manufacturing teams, the role supports equipment availability, reliability and operational performance. The Maintenance Supervisor promotes a proactive maintenance culture through effective frontline leadership, disciplined use of the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), structured problem-solving and continuous improvement.
Role Boundaries
The Equipment Maintenance Manager retains accountability for maintenance strategy, budgets, lifecycle planning, capital expenditure, supplier strategy, departmental KPIs and the overall capability and performance of the maintenance function.
The Equipment Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for translating those plans into safe and effective daily execution, supervising the technicians and apprentices, coordinating breakdown response, controlling work quality and ensuring maintenance priorities are completed and accurately recorded.
Key Accountabilities
Daily Maintenance Supervision
- Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of maintenance technicians and apprentices.
- Allocate planned, reactive and improvement work according to production priorities, technical capability and available resources.
- Conduct daily maintenance team briefings, ensuring that priorities, safety requirements and outstanding equipment issues are clearly communicated.
- Monitor the progress of maintenance activities and address delays, resource constraints or technical issues promptly.
- Coordinate the maintenance response to equipment breakdowns, ensuring safe and timely fault-finding and repair.
- Escalate significant equipment failures, operational risks and resource concerns to the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Ensure effective handovers between technicians, shifts and manufacturing teams.
- Provide practical technical support and guidance during complex breakdowns and maintenance activities.
Preventative and Reactive Maintenance
- Ensure preventative and predictive maintenance activities are completed safely, on time and to the required standard.
- Coordinate breakdown repairs to minimise production downtime and operational disruption.
- Review outstanding and overdue maintenance work and agree recovery priorities with the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Support the development and improvement of preventative maintenance instructions, schedules and inspection routines.
- Ensure temporary repairs are properly controlled, documented and followed by appropriate permanent corrective action.
- Verify that equipment is safe, functional and correctly handed back to Manufacturing following maintenance work.
- Identify recurring equipment problems and initiate structured root cause analysis.
- Support the implementation and verification of corrective actions arising from equipment failures.
Team Leadership and Development
- Provide clear day-to-day leadership, direction and support to maintenance technicians and apprentices.
- Set expectations for safety, attendance, housekeeping, workmanship, communication and personal accountability.
- Monitor standards of work and provide timely, constructive feedback to team members.
- Identify technical skills gaps and training requirements and communicate these to the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Support technician training, coaching, mentoring and competency development.
- Help apprentices gain appropriate practical experience while ensuring they receive suitable supervision.
- Encourage teamwork, knowledge sharing and ownership of equipment performance.
- Support the Equipment Maintenance Manager with performance and development discussions by providing objective information on work completion, skills and training needs.
- Promote a professional and responsive maintenance service to internal customers.
Health, Safety and Environment
- Ensure all maintenance activities are completed in accordance with Health and Safety legislation, company policies and approved safe systems of work.
- Conduct or support risk assessments, method statements and pre-task safety reviews.
- Coordinate permit-to-work, isolation and lockout/tagout requirements for maintenance activities within the role’s level of authorisation.
- Ensure technicians and contractors use the appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
- Stop work where unsafe conditions or practices are identified and escalate significant concerns immediately.
- Ensure good housekeeping is maintained in maintenance workshops, stores and work areas.
- Report and support the investigation of accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions and environmental incidents.
- Assist with safety inspections, audits and corrective-action follow-up.
- Ensure that contractors working under maintenance supervision comply with site safety requirements.
CMMS and Maintenance Records
- Use the CMMS to plan, allocate, monitor and close maintenance work orders.
- Ensure technicians record work completed, time used, parts consumed, failure information and follow-up actions accurately.
- Review completed work orders for quality and completeness before closure.
- Maintain visibility of open, overdue and high-priority maintenance work.
- Support the accuracy of equipment records, asset histories and preventative maintenance schedules.
- Use CMMS information to identify recurring failures, maintenance backlogs and improvement opportunities.
- Provide accurate daily and weekly maintenance information to the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
Equipment Reliability and Continuous Improvement
- Support initiatives to improve equipment uptime, reliability and maintainability.
- Participate in structured root cause analysis and problem-solving activities.
- Help implement corrective and preventative actions and confirm that improvements are sustained.
- Support Lean Manufacturing, Total Productive Maintenance and continuous improvement activities.
- Work with Manufacturing and Engineering to identify and eliminate recurring causes of downtime.
- Encourage technicians to identify practical improvements to equipment, maintenance methods and working practices.
- Support equipment upgrades, refurbishment, installation, commissioning and production readiness activities.
- Assist with the standardisation of maintenance procedures, checklists and technical documentation.
Production and Cross-Functional Support
- Maintain close communication with Manufacturing regarding breakdowns, maintenance priorities and equipment availability.
- Coordinate planned maintenance with production schedules to minimise operational disruption.
- Provide clear updates on equipment condition, repair progress and anticipated return to service.
- Work collaboratively with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and HSE to resolve equipment-related issues.
- Support equipment investigations relating to safety, quality, process performance or customer concerns.
- Attend relevant daily operational and production meetings as the maintenance representative when required.
- Ensure that equipment is not released back into production until the appropriate technical and safety checks have been completed.
Spare Parts, Tools and Contractors
- Ensure technicians have access to the appropriate tools, spare parts, technical information and consumable materials.
- Identify critical or frequently used spare parts requiring replenishment.
- Support the control and organisation of maintenance stores and workshop areas.
- Monitor the condition and availability of maintenance tools, test equipment and lifting accessories.
- Coordinate specialist contractors for planned maintenance, breakdown support and statutory inspections when authorised.
- Monitor contractor activities to ensure work is completed safely and to the required technical standard.
- Provide feedback to the Equipment Maintenance Manager on supplier, contractor and spare-parts performance.
- Support cost control by minimising waste, avoiding unnecessary expenditure and using maintenance resources effectively.
Maintenance Performance
- Support the delivery of maintenance KPIs, including:
- Equipment uptime and availability
- Preventative maintenance completion
- Maintenance backlog
- Mean Time to Repair
- Repeat equipment failures
- Breakdown response
- Safety and housekeeping standards
- Provide accurate information for maintenance performance reviews.
- Identify adverse trends and recommend practical recovery or improvement actions.
- Follow up agreed maintenance actions to ensure completion within the required timescales.
Decision-Making Authority
The Equipment Maintenance Supervisor is authorised to:
- Prioritise and allocate daily maintenance work within agreed operational priorities.
- Reassign maintenance resources in response to equipment breakdowns or changing production needs.
- Stop maintenance work where an unacceptable safety, quality or equipment risk exists.
- Escalate equipment concerns and recommend that equipment remains out of service until it is safe and suitable for production.
- Request specialist technical or contractor support through the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
- Recommend changes to preventative maintenance plans, spare-parts holdings and maintenance procedures.
Significant expenditure, permanent changes to maintenance strategy, capital investment decisions and major supplier commitments remain subject to approval by the Equipment Maintenance Manager.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Recognised engineering apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, BTEC, ONC, HNC or equivalent qualification or experience in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing or Maintenance Engineering.
- Strong practical maintenance experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Experience maintaining industrial electrical, mechanical and automated production equipment.
- Experience fault-finding on PLC-controlled machinery and associated industrial systems.
- Good understanding of preventative and reactive maintenance practices.
- Experience using a CMMS or electronic maintenance management system.
- Demonstrated ability to organise work, manage competing priorities and coordinate technical resources.
- Strong practical problem-solving and fault-finding capability.
- Good understanding of maintenance Health and Safety requirements, safe isolation and permit-to-work controls.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technicians, Manufacturing and other support functions.
- Ability to remain calm, organised and safety-focused during significant equipment breakdowns.
Desirable
- Previous experience in a maintenance supervisory, team leader or senior technician position.
- Supervisory or team leadership qualification.
- IOSH Managing Safely or an equivalent Health and Safety qualification.
- Experience with structured root cause analysis techniques.
- Experience supporting Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement or Total Productive Maintenance programmes.
- Knowledge of maintenance performance measures such as equipment uptime, Mean Time Between Failures, Mean Time to Repair and preventative maintenance compliance.
- Experience supervising specialist maintenance contractors.
- Experience supporting equipment installation, commissioning and validation.
- Multi-skilled electrical and mechanical maintenance capability.
