JOB DESCRIPTION
UM Title: Pharmacy Manager FLSA Status: F/T

Job Summary (Purpose and Function):
The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for providing managerial and programmatic direction for the
operation of the pharmacy services. The Manager coordinates and develops standards of work
performance and plans, directs, and monitors the provision of distributive and clinical pharmacy
services to all patient care areas. The Manager ensures the functions of the department are
consistent with the practice of the department and hospital’s policies and procedures. The Manager
must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the
patients being served by the healthcare facility.
The Pharmacy Manager reports to the Executive Director of Pharmacy and is ultimately responsible
for the entire operation of the Department.
Accountabilities (For Non-exempt Employees Include Percent of Effort):
A) Responsible for the provision of pharmacy services and all routine operations of the Pharmacy
Department, and the recruitment, selection, orientation, professional development and evaluation of
employees. Serves as a change agent, role model, and facilitator for education, consultation, and
research.
B) Develops goals, objectives, and programs for the pharmacy department consistent with those of
the organization’s overall strategic plan. Demonstrates effective inter-disciplinary and
inter-facility collaboration. Plans efficient and effective utilization of resources. Ensures
compliance with regulatory agency standards. Implements decisions of the hospital’s Pharmacy and
Therapeutics Committee and other hospital committees in relation to formulary management and
process improvements. Assumes accountability for special projects as assigned.
C) Defines and resolves issues with the medication distribution system and continually evaluates
performance relative to need for expansion or revision of processes to assure the safe and
appropriate delivery of medications to all patient care areas within the healthcare facility.
Provides leadership for development and implementation of innovative systems of medication delivery
and drug therapy monitoring to assure safe and appropriate administration of medications within the
healthcare facility.
D) Provides leadership and direction to the pharmacy staff including Staff Pharmacists and
Pharmacy Technician Staff. Promotes positive customer relations and actively contributes to a
supportive work environment. Fosters a team environment within the department. Communicates with
the Executive Director of Pharmacy Services regarding operational and personnel issues.
E) Establishes and revises, when necessary, standards of care for pharmacy practice. Monitors and
ensures compliance with departmental and organizational policies and procedures, Federal and State
laws, and accrediting bodies’ standards. Investigates and initiates the resolution of customer
complaints. Plans,

services. Facilitates appropriate
utilization of resources.
F) Facilitates effective working relationships with physicians, nursing staff, administration,
and other personnel. Serves as a professional resource in facilitating inter-disciplinary practice
and communication. Serves as a resource to staff, physicians, and patients for pharmacy and
organizational policies.
G) Strives to improve patient safety in all aspects of performance of the above
essential functions, reports/documents medication errors, and attends safety in-services, when
appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):
1. Qualified candidates must have a valid Florida Pharmacist license. PharmD is required;
consideration will be given to all candidates who have been grandfathered by the state of Florida
to keep their licenses active/current if obtained before the changes to the Pharmacists’ licenses
(PharmD requirement) took place, this also includes candidates from other countries that have
obtained a Florida license.
2. Minimum of three years pharmacy management experience in a progressive hospital setting.
3. Must possess good organizational, computer and management skills.
4. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interfacing with all levels of
faculty and staff at the University of Miami.
5. Must have knowledge of computer software, particularly pharmacy system software, Microsoft
applications and automated dispensing technologies.
