The Senior Metallurgical Engineer serves as the site technical authority for metallurgy, heat treatment, AMS2750 pyrometry, materials engineering, and aerospace special process compliance. This role provides technical leadership to Quality, Operations, Engineering, and Supply Chain to ensure product integrity, regulatory compliance, customer satisfaction, and operational excellence. The position leads complex technical investigations, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and provides functional oversight of laboratory operations, pyrometry activities, and heat treat inspection processes.
Major Responsibilities
- Serve as the site's subject matter expert for metallurgy, heat treatment, materials engineering, AMS2750 pyrometry, and aerospace special process requirements.
- Provide technical leadership for material selection, heat treatment processes, metallurgical evaluations, failure analysis, and manufacturing process improvements.
- Lead root cause investigations, corrective actions, and risk assessments related to product quality, customer concerns, process failures, audit findings, and special process compliance.
- Serve as technical owner for AMS2750 compliance, including furnace qualification, Temperature Uniformity Surveys (TUS), System Accuracy Tests (SAT), instrumentation systems, calibration requirements, and thermocouple management.
- Lead Nadcap Heat Treat accreditation activities, audit preparation, audit support, corrective actions, and ongoing compliance efforts.
- Provide functional oversight and technical direction for metallurgical laboratory operations, pyrometry activities, and heat treat inspection processes.
- Train, coach, and mentor engineers, technicians, inspectors, and quality personnel in metallurgy, heat treatment, materials engineering, and problem-solving methodologies.
- Develop, maintain, and improve technical procedures, specifications, work instructions, and process controls.
- Support Material Review Board (MRB) activities and disposition of nonconforming materials and products.
- Act as the primary technical liaison with customers, suppliers, auditors, and external laboratories regarding metallurgical, material, and special process requirements.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, compliance, process capability, and operational performance.
- Support capital projects, process qualifications, and strategic initiatives related to heat treat and special process operations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Engineering, or related Engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in metallurgy, materials engineering, heat treatment, quality engineering, aerospace manufacturing, or related technical field.
- Strong knowledge of metallurgical principles, heat treatment processes, material behavior, and failure analysis techniques.
- Experience leading technical investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and cross-functional problem-solving activities.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, material specifications, and industry standards.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and lead teams without direct reporting relationships.
- Strong communication, technical writing, coaching, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Aerospace manufacturing experience.
- Experience with aerospace quality systems and special process requirements.
- Experience supporting Nadcap accreditation activities.
- Knowledge of AMS2750 pyrometry requirements and heat treat process controls.
- Experience supporting metallurgical laboratories, materials testing, and special process operations.
- Experience working with customers, suppliers, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
- Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
Compensation Details :
$105,000 - $125,000
The salary range provided is intended to display the value of the company's base pay compensation for all statewide locations across the United States. Salary is dependent on a multitude of factors, including but not limited to the physical worksite location, candidate's skill set, level of experience, education and internal peer compensation comparisons.
