Job Description

AECOM is seeking a BIM Specialist, Tunnel Practice to be based in our Mississauga office. The BIM Specialist will be responsible for tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects across Canada.

The successful candidate will support Building Information Modeling initiatives for complex underground works and will work closely with tunnel, structural, geotechnical, civil, mechanical, electrical and other disciplines within large-scale multidisciplinary project teams. This role is pivotal in driving our digital team transformation of our design, construction, and operational processes, enhancing collaboration, efficiency, and innovation across multidisciplinary teams. The position will support major underground infrastructure projects involving works such as TBM tunnels, SEM tunnels, shafts, caverns, portals, underground structures and associated infrastructure, working within large-scale multidisciplinary design teams.

Key Responsibilities

- Strong participation in developing and implementing comprehensive BIM strategies for major tunnelling and underground infrastructure projects, including P3 and Alternative Delivery projects, ensuring alignment with project goals and industry best practices.
- Being part of the team supporting BIM processes through assigned project stages, from conceptual design to coordination and through to construction as well as operational handover.
- Facilitate the integration of BIM technologies with project requirements through AI and digital twins to optimize outcomes and enable advanced predictive analytics and scenario planning.
- Champion the use of advanced visualization and immersive technologies for stakeholder engagement, virtual collaboration, and enhanced project visualization.
- Ensure robust data management practices, including the secure and efficient exchange of data across platforms and stakeholders, adhering to ISO 19650 standards.
- Oversee API integrations between BIM software and other enterprise systems to streamline workflows and improve data consistency.
- Acting as the intermediary between tunnel designers, multidisciplinary engineering teams, partners, contractors and owners so that projects remain efficient and effective.
- Engaging with teams by providing BIM subject matter expertise on Alternative Delivery Projects and Enterprise Critical Pursuits involving tunnelling and underground works.
- Working closely with all team members such as tunnel engineers, structural engineers, geotechnical engineers and other disciplines who are participating in all aspects of producing project information.
- Ensuring that BIM execution plans are produced, properly followed and maintained for each project.
- Support the implementation of digital information plans and strategies.
- Working knowledge of ISO 19650 standards suite and related BIM standards.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in BIM implementation and/or delivery on large-scale, multidisciplinary infrastructure or P3 projects, and working with multidisciplinary design projects using Autodesk Construction Cloud.

Preferred Qualifications

- 5+ years of BIM experience on major infrastructure projects, with preference for tunnel, transit, rail, underground station, or transportation projects.
- Advanced proficiency with: Autodesk Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks Manage, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), ProjectWise, Bentley OpenBuildings and OpenTunnel (considered an asset).
- Experience developing and managing federated BIM models across civil, structural, architectural, geotechnical, track, systems, utilities, and MEP disciplines.
- Familiarity with tunnel delivery methods, including TBM, SEM/NATM, cut-and-cover, mined caverns, and underground stations.
- Knowledge of BIM standards and digital delivery requirements.
- Experience supporting model-based design coordination, clash detection, constructability reviews, and multidisciplinary design integration.
- Ability to review and coordinate complex interfaces between tunnel lining, shafts, stations, systems, utilities, trackwork, and ancillary structures.
- Familiarity with geospatial and survey data integration, including point clouds, laser scanning, reality capture, and GIS platforms.
- Knowledge of 4D and 5D BIM workflows, construction sequencing, and digital construction practices.
- Experience producing BIM deliverables for Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build, or Alliance project delivery models.
- Understanding of asset information requirements, digital handover, digital twins, and lifecycle asset management principles.
- Exposure to major transit or underground infrastructure projects such as subway, LRT, commuter rail, highway tunnels, water conveyance tunnels, or utility tunnels.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary consultant, contractor, or owner's teams on large projects exceeding $100M in capital value.
- Scripting and automation skills using Dynamo, Python, PowerShell, or Autodesk APIs would be considered an asset.
- Experience implementing BIM quality assurance/quality control processes and model audits.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate among designers, contractors, owners, and construction teams.
