The Electrical Designer leads complex electrical design projects and serves as a technical expert for advanced power distribution and control systems. This role is responsible for developing accurate, compliant, and manufacturable electrical drawing packages while coordinating closely with mechanical, application, and manufacturing teams. The Electrical Designer also drives continuous improvement of design standards, tools, and workflows, and provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of complex or large-scale electrical construction drawings, including schematics, wiring diagrams, three-line diagrams, cable schedules, and sub-panel layouts.
- Apply advanced understanding of electrical design principles and internal standards to resolve intricate design challenges and ensure technical integrity.
- Ensure all electrical designs comply with established standards and project specifications.
- Serve as the primary electrical design contact for complex or high-visibility projects, providing expert input throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate electrical design activities with mechanical, application, and manufacturing teams to resolve conflicts and ensure manufacturability of panels and systems.
- Coordinate layouts for panels and doors with other disciplines to achieve cohesive and practical designs.
- Provide technical direction during design reviews and project planning sessions, offering recommendations and clarifications as needed.
- Ensure drawing packages meet quality, accuracy, and compliance requirements, using established checklists and processes to minimize errors.
- Identify recurring design or process issues and implement improvements to reduce rework and enhance consistency across projects.
- Apply and refine checklists, standards, and workflows to minimize manufacturing rework and improve overall design quality.
- Oversee engineering changes for major design modifications, ensuring full technical alignment, clear documentation, and timely implementation.
- Maintain drawing documentation, including revisions and version control, to support traceability of design decisions and updates.
- Support traceability and documentation of design changes, ensuring that project records remain complete and up to date.
- Drive initiatives to improve electrical design methodologies, templates, and standards across the team.
- Share advanced technical expertise to strengthen overall team capabilities and promote best practices in electrical design.
- Support the development of new tools, checklists, and workflows that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and quality of drawing packages.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior designers on drawing practices, standards, and quality checks, offering constructive feedback on accuracy and completeness.
- Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, balancing priorities and meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support project goals and departmental objectives.
Essential Skills
- Advanced knowledge of power distribution and substation control systems, including three-phase systems, relays, transformers, control switches, and related components.
- Expert ability to independently develop and revise one-line, three-line, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and related electrical documentation.
- Proficiency in CAD software, with SolidWorks and SolidWorks Electrical preferred; experience with AutoCAD, EPLAN, or equivalent tools is also valuable.
- Ability to establish and maintain drawing standards and ensure consistency across multiple projects.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure design packages meet quality and compliance requirements with minimal oversight.
- Skill in coordinating electrical design with mechanical, application, and manufacturing teams to resolve conflicts and ensure manufacturability.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, effectively prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear documentation and design explanations.
- Ability to mentor and coach junior designers, providing constructive feedback on drawing accuracy, quality, and adherence to standards.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and best practices in electrical design, such as ANSI, NEC, IEC, and IEEE.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with 3D models in support of electrical design and panel layout.
- Ability to contribute to the development and refinement of design methodologies, templates, and checklists.
- Experience participating in or leading design reviews and project planning sessions.
- Demonstrated ability to identify process improvements and implement changes that enhance design efficiency and quality.
- Comfort working as a primary technical resource on complex or high-visibility projects.
Work Environment
The Electrical Designer works in a professional engineering environment that relies heavily on CAD tools such as SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD, EPLAN, or equivalent software for developing detailed electrical drawings and 3D models. The role involves regular collaboration with mechanical, application, and manufacturing teams, often through design reviews, planning meetings, and cross-functional coordination. Work is typically performed in an office or design center setting with access to modern engineering tools and documentation systems. The position requires managing multiple projects and deadlines in a dynamic environment, maintaining organized drawing documentation, and adhering to established quality and compliance standards.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $55000.00 - $95000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
