THE ROLE:

AMD is looking for a strategic research and software engineering leader who is passionate about advancing AI, AI for Science, high-performance computing, and energy-efficient computing. You will be a member of a core team of incredibly talented industry specialists and will work with the latest AI models, large-scale computing systems, hardware architectures, and software technologies to help define and demonstrate current and future AMD capabilities.

THE PERSON:

The ideal candidate should be passionate about advanced research, AI, AI for Science, high-performance, energy-efficient computing, and software engineering and possess the technical leadership skills to identify important emerging opportunities, formulate research directions, and drive sophisticated efforts from concept through demonstration and deployment. Able to communicate effectively and work optimally with different teams across AMD, while providing technical leadership across organizational boundaries and developing strong relationships with external research, industry, academic, and government partners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Work with AMD’s AI, architecture, software, systems, and research specialists to identify and develop technologies that influence future products and platforms across AI, HPC, AI for Science, and energy-efficient computing
- Apply a data minded and scientific approach to workload characterization, model and system evaluation, performance analysis, and identification of architectural and software opportunities
- Stay informed of AI model, agentic AI, scientific computing, software, system, and hardware trends and innovations, especially pertaining to model training, inference, distributed computing, algorithms, memory systems, interconnects, and emerging architectures
- Design and develop new groundbreaking AMD technologies spanning AI model training and inference, agentic AI, AI for Science, scientific computing, heterogeneous systems, and energy-efficient computing
- Participating in the definition, evaluation, and early enablement of important AI, HPC, and AI for Science workloads on new AMD GPUs, CPUs, systems, and software platforms, including using application insights to help guide future hardware and software capabilities
- Debugging/fix existing issues and research alternative, more efficient ways to train, deploy, scale, and execute AI, scientific, and HPC workloads, with particular emphasis on performance, scalability, energy efficiency, and total cost of computation
- Develop technical relationships with peers and partners, including leading collaborations with AI labs, national laboratories, universities, supercomputing centers, open-source communities, strategic customers, and other external organizations

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

- Strong research and software development background, and familiarity with modern AI, HPC, and scientific computing frameworks and software stacks.
- Ability to write high-quality code with a keen attention to detail and to develop innovative research prototypes, performance studies, and production-oriented software.
- Experience with AI model training, fine-tuning, inference, agentic AI, AI for Science, distributed computing, numerical methods, scientific applications, or large-scale HPC and AI systems.
- Experience with Linux-based AI and HPC environments, GPU computing, heterogeneous systems, distributed systems, and technologies for scaling applications across large clusters and supercomputers.
- Experience with software development processes and tools such as debuggers, source code control systems (GitHub), profilers, performance-analysis tools, benchmarking and evaluation frameworks, and open-source development is a plus.
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills, including the ability to translate emerging workloads and research results into software, system, and future architecture opportunities.
- Motivating technical leader with good interpersonal skills, broad technical judgment, and demonstrated ability to influence research directions, work across organizations, and build productive relationships with external partners

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

- Master's or Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent preferred.
