About the Role

The Audit Director – Market Risk and Markets is accountable for leading the delivery of independent, high-quality third line assurance across Markets Risk and the Markets business. Working closely with the Audit Director – Markets, International, providing assurance over the Markets audit portfolio and value chain.

The role provides independent third line assurance over the effectiveness of governance, risk management and controls supporting customer outcomes, conduct, service reliability and regulatory compliance Markets and Market Risk, Critical Operations and regulatory-required audit activity.

Reporting to the General Manager Audit – Financial Risk & Markets, this role plays a key leadership position within Internal Audit, maintaining strong stakeholder relationships, developing audit capability, supporting Internal Audit’s strategic priorities and initiatives, and role modelling the standards, behaviours and independence expected of audit leaders.

What could your day look like?

As the Audit Director – Market Risk and Markets, working closely with the Audit Director – Markets, International, you will be accountable for:

- Delivery of independent audit coverage across Markets asset class and Market Risk, including customer value chains, Critical Operations and regulatory-required audit activity, aligned to key risks and the approved audit plan.

- Form clear, evidence-based views on the effectiveness of governance, risk management and controls supporting customer outcomes, conduct, service reliability and regulatory compliance across the Markets business.

- Jointly own portfolio-level risk assessment and audit planning for the Markets business and Market Risk, shaping coverage priorities, contributing to enterprise-wide audit planning, escalating material themes and emerging risks, and driving continuous improvement in audit quality, execution and stakeholder experience.

- Provide constructive challenge and influence to business, risk and operations stakeholders across Markets and Market Risk to strengthen governance, risk management and control environments.

- Oversee audit delivery and assurance delivery for Market Risk and Markets business, ensuring high-quality, timely outcomes, strong audit discipline and delivery in line with Internal Audit methodology and Global Internal Audit Standards.

- Collaborate across Internal Audit, including customer value chain audit teams, Centres of Audit and subject matter experts, to ensure coordinated assurance coverage across Markets and Market Risk activities.

- Lead, develop and mentor the Australia-based Markets audit team, building capability, depth and consistency in audit execution and professional judgement.

- Support regulatory engagement, including supervisory interactions and requests and contributing to Internal Audit’s strategic priorities and initiatives.

What will you bring?

To grow and be successful in this role, you’ll ideally bring the following:

- Market Risk management expertise: Expert understanding of Market Risk management, including applicable APRA prudential standards for traded and non-traded risks, valuation practices, limits frameworks, stress testing, governance and prudential expectations.

- Markets business expertise: Expert understanding of Markets businesses, including products, trading and sales activities, customer value chains, Critical Operations and regulatory-required coverage across multiple jurisdictions.

- Internal Audit and assurance expertise: Extensive experience delivering complex audits or assurance engagements in large, regulated organisations, with strong expertise in Internal Audit methodology, risk-based planning, scoping, testing, reporting and issue validation.

- Regulatory interaction: proven records of regulatory interaction with key Australian regulators. Experience includes support the preparation and meeting with regulatory review of Market Risk and the Markets business.

- Data-enabled audit and analytics-informed assurance: Experience using data analytics and data-enabled assurance techniques to inform audit scoping, testing and conclusions.

- Stakeholder engagement and influence: Strong capability to engage credibly with senior business, risk and operations stakeholders, provide constructive challenge and influence improvements in risk management and control environments.

- Leadership and people development: Experience leading, coaching and developing audit teams, building professional judgement, capability depth and succession.

- Broader Markets and regulatory exposure: Experience with Treasury activities, hedging strategies, non-traded Market Risk exposures, non-financial risk assurance within Markets environments, or regulatory reviews and supervisory interactions in international or regional contexts, is advantageous.

- International and multi-jurisdictional experience: Experience working in, or leading assurance activity across, multiple jurisdictions.

- Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. finance, economics, mathematics, statistics or risk management), ideally with professional qualifications such as FRM, CFA or CA/CPA. Postgraduate qualifications in risk management, quantitative analysis, audit or compliance are advantageous.
