Job Title: Structural Engineer in Training (EIT) Job Description
This Structural Engineer in Training (EIT) role focuses on the design of civil and structural engineering projects, with potential emphasis on public works, regional water systems, energy, land development, transportation, and railroad facilities. You work closely with a Project Manager to help define project scope, meet client expectations, support contract pricing, and perform hands-on engineering services. You contribute to project quality oversight, resource planning and coordination, and the achievement of schedule and profitability goals. Over time, you may serve as Engineer of Record on project plans, applying your structural engineering experience across a variety of materials and design software. This role requires an EIT credential and a commitment to obtaining professional licensure in applicable states.
Responsibilities
- Design civil and structural engineering projects in focus areas such as public works, regional water systems, energy, land development, transportation, and railroad projects.
- Collaborate closely with the Project Manager to identify and develop project scope in alignment with client requirements and technical standards.
- Assist in meeting customer expectations by providing accurate, timely, and professional engineering support throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support the preparation and pricing of engineering contracts, contributing technical input and scope definition as needed.
- Perform structural analysis and design using appropriate methods and software for materials such as concrete, masonry, steel, and timber.
- Conduct site development and site investigations to gather data, evaluate conditions, and inform design decisions.
- Oversee project quality by reviewing calculations, drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with current building codes and standards.
- Identify project resources and help manage their utilization to meet schedule milestones and profitability targets.
- Contribute to meeting project deadlines by organizing tasks, coordinating with team members, and proactively addressing design and coordination issues.
- Support or eventually serve as Engineer of Record on project plans, assuming responsibility for the technical accuracy and completeness of structural designs.
- Apply general understanding of geotechnical engineering evaluations when coordinating with geotechnical professionals and incorporating subsurface data into structural designs.
- Communicate effectively with clients, team members, and other stakeholders through clear verbal and written correspondence.
- Participate in training and mentoring activities to support the development of structural design skills and knowledge of current building codes and standards within the team.
Essential Skills
- EIT (Engineer in Training) certification required.
- Bachelors degree in architectural engineering, civil engineering, structural engineering, or a closely related engineering field required.
- Demonstrated experience in structural projects, including structural analysis and design.
- Proficiency in civil engineering and structural analysis and design principles.
- Experience with site development and site investigations in support of civil and structural projects.
- Technical knowledge of structural materials including concrete, masonry, steel, and timber.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders.
- Excellent listening and reading skills, including strong attention to detail and proofreading ability.
- Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills applied to engineering challenges and project issues.
- Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive client and team relationships.
- Ability to lead, train, and mentor others in structural design and the application of current building codes and standards.
- General understanding of geotechnical engineering evaluations and how they inform structural design.
- Ability and willingness to obtain professional engineering licensure in the states required by the company.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is a plus and may enhance opportunities for serving as Engineer of Record.
- Experience with a variety of structural design software is preferred.
- Familiarity with current building codes and standards relevant to structural and civil engineering.
- Capability to work on multidisciplinary projects spanning public works, water systems, energy, land development, transportation, and railroad infrastructure.
- Interest in growing into roles with greater responsibility for project quality, resource management, and profitability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a project team and adapt to evolving client and project needs.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional engineering environment that combines office-based design work with occasional site development and site investigation activities. You use civil and structural design software, standard office productivity tools, and work within established engineering standards and building codes. Typical work involves collaborating with a Project Manager and multidisciplinary team members, reviewing drawings and calculations, and communicating regularly with clients and stakeholders. Work hours generally follow standard business schedules, with flexibility as needed to meet project deadlines. Attire is professional and appropriate for an office setting, with suitable field-appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment when visiting project sites.

This is a Contract position based out of Overland Park, KS.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $37.00 - $49.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
