Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Oncology / Infusion Job Description Under general supervision, this Registered Nurse role provides professional oncology and infusion nursing care in accordance with national standards and specialty guidelines. The nurse delivers age-appropriate care to late adolescents, adults, middle-aged, and elderly patients, while collaborating closely with an interdisciplinary team to assess, plan, and manage patient and family needs. This position focuses on safe medication and therapy administration, continuity of care, patient education, and psychosocial support in an office-based setting. Responsibilities
- Assess patient health status by interviewing patients regarding current condition and medical history.
- Collect and record comprehensive nursing assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the medical record.
- Review and report findings from physical examinations, laboratory data, radiographic results, and psychosocial assessments to the provider.
- Evaluate patient and family needs and provide clear teaching and instructional materials to support understanding of diagnoses and treatments.
- Offer psychosocial support to patients and families throughout the course of treatment.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality and uphold all privacy and security standards.
- Prepare and administer therapies under the direction and supervision of a physician, following established protocols and safety procedures.
- Learn and apply proper techniques for mixing chemotherapy and immunotherapy agents in accordance with regulatory and safety guidelines.
- Administer all medications using the correct dosage, route, timing, and technique, ensuring safe and accurate delivery.
- Verify that pre-authorizations and appropriate consent forms are obtained before administering therapies when applicable.
- Facilitate dose modification by assessing the patient, reviewing laboratory results, consulting protocols or treatment plans, calculating doses, and collaborating with physicians on dosage changes, symptom management, and treatment issues.
- Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices safely and effectively.
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation of all patient care activities, assessments, treatments, and outcomes.
- Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture to support accurate billing for services provided.
- Restock supply areas as needed to ensure availability of materials and maintain readiness for patient care.
- Follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and any materials potentially infected with blood-borne pathogens.
- Maintain all disinfection protocols to ensure a clean and safe clinical environment.
- Maintain equipment according to quality control standards and report any issues or malfunctions promptly.
- Facilitate clinical operations and patient care by supporting efficient workflows and coordination among team members.
- Manage patient medication refill requests and document relevant information in the patient chart.
- Assist physicians with examinations and procedures, ensuring patients are prepared and supported throughout.
- Maintain efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of exam rooms to minimize wait times and enhance patient experience.
- Triage patient phone calls as needed, provide appropriate guidance, and document relevant information in the patient record.
- Facilitate communication between patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team, coordinating services related to patient care when necessary.
- Assist patients in locating and accessing available community resources that support their overall well-being.
- Participate in interprofessional collaboration to enhance care quality and patient outcomes.
- Assist and collaborate with clinical research activities as needed, following applicable protocols and guidelines.
- Act as a resource for LPN/LVNs and medical assistants, providing guidance, support, and clinical expertise.
- Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed to support continuity of care across locations.
- Engage in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing by participating in ongoing educational opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support patient care and clinic operations.
Essential Skills
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Nursing.
- Demonstrated experience in direct patient care in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to provide age-specific care to late adolescents, adults, middle-aged, and elderly patients.
- Competence in venipuncture, accessing implanted ports, and maintaining central line catheter devices.
- Skill in safe medication administration, including accurate dosage calculation, route selection, timing, and technique.
- Knowledge of oncology and infusion nursing practices or strong interest and ability to learn chemotherapy and immunotherapy preparation and administration.
- Ability to conduct thorough health assessments, including history taking, physical examination review, and interpretation of lab and radiographic data.
- Strong documentation skills with attention to detail and accuracy in recording patient care.
- Understanding of reimbursement procedures and charge capture processes.
- Familiarity with OSHA guidelines and safe handling of cytotoxic agents and biohazardous materials.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to privacy regulations.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Strong organizational skills to manage patient flow, triage calls, and coordinate care efficiently.
- Capacity to provide psychosocial support and patient education in a compassionate and clear manner.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in infusion therapy is highly beneficial.
- Background or exposure to oncology nursing and chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration is preferred.
- Experience supporting or participating in clinical research activities is an advantage.
- Ability to act as a resource and mentor to LPN/LVNs and medical assistants.
- Comfort working within an interdisciplinary team focused on continuous improvement of patient and human experience.
- Interest in professional development and ongoing education in oncology and infusion nursing.
- Strong teamwork orientation and ability to build positive, long-term relationships with patients.
- Awareness of community resources and ability to guide patients and families in accessing support services.
Work Environment This role is based in an office setting that provides outpatient oncology and infusion services, offering a structured MondayFriday schedule with no weekend or holiday shifts. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $82000.00 - $90000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
