Position Overview

Senior Interior Designer, Commercial Design

Shaw Commercial is a global design leader in commercial flooring for some of the world’s most creative and innovative environments. Our vast, sustainable product offerings can be found in diverse markets such as workplace, healthcare, hospitality, education and multi-family dwellings; supporting the spaces in which we work, learn, live, play and heal. Shaw Commercial is a part of Shaw Industries, a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. with more than $5 billion in annual sales and approximately 18,000 associates worldwide.

With over 700 Account Executives across the globe, the Interior Design team serves as a critical extension of Shaw Contract & Patcraft sales and customer experience strategy. The team provides complimentary professional design services that help customers select flooring solutions, visualize design concepts, and bring projects to life, ultimately driving specifications, strengthening customer relationships, and supporting business growth.

The Senior Interior Designer, Commercial Design is a senior-level design professional who independently leads complex projects, serves as a trusted design consultant to customers and teammates, influences business outcomes through design excellence and strategic thinking, and elevates the performance of the studio through expertise, mentorship, and thoughtful leadership. This role combines commercial design expertise, customer consultation, design strategy, and business partnership to deliver exceptional customer experiences and design solutions.

Design Expertise and Project Leadership

- Lead complex commercial flooring design projects from concept through completion, helping customers select flooring solutions that align with project goals, design intent, performance requirements, and business objectives.
- Serve as the design expert on assigned accounts, elevating project outcomes and driving design strategy that strengthens customer partnerships and specification opportunities.
- Create design concepts and product recommendations using Shaw flooring products, coordinating paint, finishes, and accessories based on customer floor plans, project requirements, and segment needs.
- Create digital palette boards, storyboards, segment-specific packages, and physical or digital presentation boards that communicate the narrative of a design concept and guide the visualization team in developing 2D and 3D renderings.
- Partner directly with architects, interior designers, end users, and Account Executives to develop flooring solutions that support customer goals and project success.
- Support strategic customer engagements including mill tours, customer presentations, style-outs, standards programs, and major account initiatives.
- Lead projects across a variety of commercial market segments including Workplace, Hospitality, Healthcare, Education, Government, Senior Living, and other commercial environments.
- Support large strategic and global accounts by providing senior-level design expertise on complex projects and customer initiatives.
- Create reusable tools, standards, and best practices that raise the quality and consistency of the team's work in partnership with leadership.
- Take initiative on tasks or issues even when all the facts are not yet available, proactively identifying project risks, opportunities, and process improvements before issues arise.

Business and Strategic Impact

- Understand how design services influence specifications, customer relationships, and business growth, and apply that understanding to the work rather than supporting projects in isolation.
- Serve as part of a key customer-facing design service that differentiates Shaw Contract in the marketplace and helps drive product selection and specification activity.
- Learn and apply specification strategy and understand the business drivers of each commercial segment.
- Partner closely with Segment Marketing Managers, Account Executives, and cross-functional teams to align design solutions with business objectives.
- Track project outcomes and success stories and contribute to strategic initiatives that support brand and organizational goals.
- Stay informed on industry trends, commercial design influences, and consumer drivers and share insights that inspire innovation and inform customer decisions.
- Develop an understanding of the unique requirements across multiple commercial market segments and apply those insights to project recommendations.

Communication and Influence

- Present design rationale, product recommendations, and design solutions confidently to customers, architects, interior designers, Account Executives, and internal stakeholders.
- Lead discussions on design trends, application recommendations, and project solutions that inspire customer confidence and influence project direction.
- Serve as a visible representative of Shaw Contract Design Services during customer visits, presentations, trade events, and collaborative planning sessions.
- Build credibility and trust through commercial design expertise, customer focus, and collaborative partnership.
- Influence peers and stakeholders through knowledge, communication, and a solutions-oriented mindset.
- Present recommendations and insights to leadership and cross-functional teams.

Mentorship and Leadership Through Influence

- Mentor and develop peers, coaching with the mindset of growing others rather than having all the answers.
- Serve as a senior resource for designers by sharing industry knowledge, commercial design expertise, and project guidance.
- Provide feedback effectively and consistently, helping teammates build confidence and capability.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive team culture that encourages learning, partnership, and professional growth.
- Contribute to team development, process improvement, and broader organizational objectives, becoming a trusted resource and respected voice within the studio.
- Help establish growth pathways and elevate overall design capabilities across the design services organization.
