Job Summary
Join the Duke University Hospital Neurology team as an Advanced Practice Provider and gain experience across multiple inpatient neurology subspecialties. This role offers the opportunity to cross-train across Neurology Consults, General Neurology, and the Epilepsy Management Unit , developing a broad clinical skill set while working alongside experienced neurologists, APPs, residents, and fellows.
The APP provides comprehensive inpatient care, including patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, medication management, care coordination, and patient and family education. The role also provides opportunities to participate in quality improvement, clinical research, and education while contributing to a collaborative, multidisciplinary care environment.
This is an ideal opportunity for an APP who enjoys the complexity of inpatient neurology, values collaboration, and is interested in developing expertise across multiple areas of neurologic care.
Specific Job Responsibilities and Standards
- Provide comprehensive inpatient neurologic care across General Neurology, Neurology Consults, and Epilepsy services.
- Obtain histories, perform physical examinations, assess changes in clinical status, and develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the neurology team.
- Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies, prescribe medications, and perform procedures within established scope of practice and credentialing.
- Collaborate with neurologists, residents, fellows, nurses, care managers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate patient care and facilitate transitions of care.
- Recognize and respond to clinical deterioration, initiating appropriate interventions and escalating care when needed.
- Educate patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding neurologic conditions, treatment plans, and care needs.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation and communicate pertinent patient information to the care team.
- Participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, clinical research, and initiatives that advance the delivery of neurologic care.
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
- PA: Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant Program; Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred.
- NP: Graduate of an accredited Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP); Master’s or Doctoral degree preferred.
License
- PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by the NC Medical Board with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant.
- NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NC Board of Nursing with authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.
Certification
- PA: PA-C (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants).
- NP: AGACNP-BC (Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Certification).
Experience
- APP experience in neurology, epilepsy, or similar acute care setting preferred, but not required.
Job Hours
- Four 10-hour shifts per week
- Occasional weekend coverage
- No on-call or overnight requirements
- Additional hours as needed to support patient care
