About this role

Mid-State Welding fabricates structural and miscellaneous steel for commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects. Our shop produces beams, columns, stairs, rails, platforms, embeds, bollards, supports, and custom steel assemblies that are shipped directly to job sites. We are seeking a Cost Estimator - Structural Steel to join our team. This position will play an important role in expanding our estimating capacity by performing detailed takeoffs, reviewing project scope, coordinating supplier pricing, and developing estimates our leadership team can confidently review and price.

We’re looking for someone who is detail-oriented, analytical, organized, and comfortable reading construction drawings. Experience with structural steel, miscellaneous metals, fabrication, steel detailing, or construction estimating is strongly preferred.

What You’ll Do:

- Review structural, architectural, and miscellaneous-metal drawings, specifications, addenda, bid instructions, and project scope documents.
- Perform detailed material takeoffs for structural steel and miscellaneous metals, including beams, columns, HSS, channels, angles, plates, bracing, stairs, handrails, guardrails, ladders, platforms, grating, support steel, and related materials.
- Develop detailed project estimates using material quantities, labor requirements, current pricing, waste factors, purchased components, coatings, freight, detailing, testing, and outside services.
- Verify vendor quotes for scope completeness and project requirements.
- Prepare estimates for leadership review, including major quantities, fabrication hours, purchased items, outside services, special requirements, and potential cost risks.
- Assist with tracking submitted bids and reviewing estimated costs against actual project results.
- Manage multiple estimates while meeting deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.

What We’re Looking For:

- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings is required.
- Strong Excel and general computer skills.
- Previous experience in structural steel, miscellaneous metals, steel fabrication, steel detailing, estimating, or a closely related construction environment strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of or the ability to quickly learn how steel is purchased, processed, fabricated, finished, and shipped.
- Ability to recognize missing information, conflicting dimensions, unusual specifications, specialty materials, finishes, testing requirements, and scope boundaries.
- Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Experience with Tekla PowerFab or similar steel fabrication/estimating software preferred.
- 3D/BIM model experience is a plus.

Work Environment/Schedule:

- Indoor steel fabrication shop
- Schedule: Monday to Friday 6:30 am to 3:30 pm (Fridays off at 3:00 pm)
