Job Title: Construction Materials Technician Job Description
The Construction Materials Technician performs field and limited laboratory testing on construction materials, supports inspections and observations on active projects, and accurately documents results in accordance with project specifications and industry standards. This role follows written and verbal instructions, applies fundamental knowledge of soils and concrete testing, and contributes to safe, high-quality project delivery under general supervision.
Responsibilities
- Receive, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions related to assigned testing and inspection activities.
- Review project plans, specifications, and testing requirements to prepare for field work and ensure compliance with project standards.
- Perform field testing, inspections, and observations on construction projects under general supervision, following applicable procedures and standards.
- Document all field activities and prepare daily reports that accurately reflect testing, inspection, and observation results.
- Identify non-conforming conditions or material deficiencies and promptly communicate these findings to appropriate project personnel.
- Clean, maintain, and calibrate assigned testing equipment in accordance with relevant standards and company procedures.
- Safely transport, operate, and maintain specialized testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and other field instruments, as required.
- Apply knowledge of soil classification, compaction testing, concrete testing, and other standard construction materials testing procedures during field and laboratory work.
- Assist with sample collection, material testing, and data recording in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.
- Follow all safety policies and applicable regulations while performing field and laboratory activities to maintain a safe work environment.
- Organize and maintain testing and inspection records to ensure accurate documentation and traceability.
- Use computers, tablets, and business software applications to complete reports and communicate results.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, contractors, and team members through professional communication and conduct.
- Manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing project demands while maintaining accuracy and quality in testing and documentation.
- Represent the organization positively in the field and office through a professional demeanor and commitment to ethical, responsible work practices.
Essential Skills
- Basic understanding of construction materials testing, inspections, sample collection, and field documentation practices.
- Ability to accurately record, maintain, and organize testing and inspection records.
- Proficiency with computers, tablets, and common business software applications.
- Ability to learn and utilize proprietary software and reporting systems for test reporting and documentation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with project stakeholders and preparing clear reports.
- Ability to follow procedures, accept direction, and work independently after appropriate training.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, contractors, and team members.
- Professional demeanor and ability to represent the organization positively in both field and office settings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and accuracy in testing and documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing project demands.
- Commitment to working safely, ethically, and responsibly at all times.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and ability to operate company vehicles safely.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with concrete and soil testing in a construction environment.
- Familiarity with civil construction and construction materials testing practices.
- Knowledge of soil classification and compaction testing procedures.
- Experience using nuclear density gauges and other specialized field testing equipment.
- Understanding of American Concrete Institute (ACI) practices related to concrete testing.
- Ability to assist with material testing and data recording in accordance with industry standards.
Work Environment
This position is primarily on-site in and around Louisville, Kentucky, working on active construction projects. The role involves regular field work, including travel to job sites, performing tests outdoors and in varying weather conditions, and handling specialized testing equipment such as nuclear density gauges. Work is conducted under general supervision, with frequent interaction with contractors and project teams. The environment requires adherence to all safety policies and regulations, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and a professional appearance suitable for both field and office settings.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Louisville, KY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
