Job Title: Accounting Manager – Real Estate (Part-Time)

Reports To: COO / Director of Operations
Location: Houston, TX / HYBRID

Terms: Part-time
Salary: Base + performance incentives

About Us

Fresh Start Home Services is one of Houston's leading home-buying companies, purchasing more than 150 homes per year and growing. We help homeowners solve real estate problems, from simple sales to inherited properties, title issues, and complicated family situations.

Our business spans acquisitions, dispositions, fix-and-flips, a single-family rental portfolio with in-house property management, and private lending. The business runs across several entities and accounting systems.

About the Role

We're hiring an experienced accountant to take ownership of our books. Our virtual accounting team handles transaction volume. This role is responsible for the accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of the financials.

You'll lead our virtual accounting team, review their work before it goes anywhere, close the books every month across multiple entities, and deliver clear reporting to leadership. You'll be the main point of contact for our outside CPA and keep the books tax-ready year-round.

You'll identify issues early, resolve them, and keep leadership informed without needing to be asked.

The role is part-time, about 10 to 20 hours per week on a set schedule, with full responsibility for close and reporting. It suits an accountant who has run a close before and prefers a reduced schedule.

Responsibilities

- Own the monthly close across all entities and hit the close deadline without being chased

- Lead the virtual accounting team: assign work, set standards, and review everything before it's final

- Reconcile all bank, credit card, and loan accounts every month across every set of books

- Keep flip properties, rental properties, and fixed assets classified and recorded correctly, including depreciation and refinance activity

- Maintain the books for our private notes and loans, including interest, balances, and payment schedules

- Reconcile rental and property management activity in Buildium with the rest of the company's books

- Track and record intercompany activity between entities cleanly

- Approve vendor invoices and make routine payments within defined company controls

- Deliver weekly cash position reports, monthly and quarterly financial packages, and property-level P&Ls

- Build ad hoc reports when leadership needs answers

- Serve as the main point of contact for our outside CPA and keep books tax-ready year-round

- Raise problems early and push back when something doesn't add up

- Document accounting processes and improve the systems that prevent mistakes

What Success Looks Like

- Monthly close completed for all entities by the 10th business day of the following month

- Every bank, credit card, and loan account reconciled monthly

- Weekly cash position report delivered every Monday, covering all entities

- Monthly P&L, balance sheet, and property-level P&Ls delivered with the close

- Quarterly financial package delivered within 15 business days of quarter-end

- CPA requests answered within 2 business days

- Fixed-asset and depreciation schedules kept current and tied to the books

- Errors caught in review before they reach reports or the CPA

Candidate Qualities

Required

- 5+ years of accounting experience, including owning a monthly close

- Multi-entity accounting experience: separate sets of books, intercompany activity, and consolidated reporting

- Strong command of fixed assets and depreciation

- Experience reviewing and correcting other people's work

- Advanced QuickBooks Online skills and strong Excel skills

- Available on a set weekly schedule, including 1–2 days in our Houston office

Strongly preferred

- Real estate, property management, or real estate investment accounting experience

- Experience with Buildium or similar property management accounting software

- Experience accounting for notes payable, notes receivable, and private lending

- Experience managing remote or offshore team members

- Manages your own calendar and deadlines

Scope of the Role

- Transaction entry and categorization are handled by our virtual team. This role reviews and owns the results.

- The role requires a consistent weekly schedule, including 1–2 office days, with additional time during close and year-end.
