Protection & Control Field Services Supervisor (SIA)
DESCRIPTION
The APC Power Delivery Protection and Control Field Services (P&CFS) department is seeking a Field Services Supervisor for the Substation Integration & Automation (SIA) group. This position is located in Birmingham, Alabama. Must be willing to live within a commutable distance to assigned office location. This position is responsible for leading and supervising engineers and technicians that perform substation RTU commissioning and maintenance work statewide. This position may be required to perform field work at times as resource requirements dictate, to serve an on-call rotation, and be available to work outside normal business hours. This position will be filled as an exempt level 7.
The major job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Provide overall leadership and direction to the SIA P&C Field Services work group
- Ensure employees know and follow safe behaviors including all rules and procedures

- Provide technical guidance and direction for issues related to substation remote terminal units (RTUs)

- Ensure work is performed and documented as prescribed by SIA policies and procedures
- Ensure top level customer service is provided to internal and external customers
- Respond to system problems during normal hours as well as after-hours’ on-call rotations
- Motivate the work group in a way to promote a great place to work atmosphere
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
- 4 -year BS Engineering Degree from an ABET accredited institution (Electrical Preferred) and 4 years P&C FS field work experience required OR 2 or 4-year BS/BET Degree in Engineering Technology and 8 years P&C FS field work experience required
- Eight (8) years of combined experience in P&C Field Services (Protection or SIA), P&C Substation Design, SIA Applications, TMC Substations Maintenance, or System Operations is highly preferred
- Experience in field testing and commissioning RTUs (DAQ and/or microprocessor based) is required
- Experience in establishing communications between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) is required
- Experience in testing and commissioning microprocessor field devices is preferred
- Experience with applicable NERC CIP requirements for substation environments is highly preferred
- Experience with cybersecurity technology in a substation environment is a plus
- Formal performance management experience is highly preferred
- Extensive knowledge of protective relays, relaying schemes and control systems is a plus
- Active Professional Engineers (PE) License is a plus
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Extensive knowledge of RTUs and digital communications between intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) is required
- Knowledge of transmission and distribution control schemes and how those schemes interface with SCADA
- Ability to analyze transmission and distribution system SCADA events as related to customer outages
- Project management of transmission and distribution substation projects
- Interacting with internal customers and external entities on technical and/or compliance issues
- Performance management, ability to address adverse behaviors and demanding situations
- Transmission and distribution protection and control system commissioning and maintenance procedures
- Transmission and distribution system operations as related to protection and control issues
- Knowledgeable NERC CIP, and other applicable compliance standards
- Knowledgeable of industry trends and new technology
- Ability to deal with heavy workloads, multiple tasks, and conflicting demands
- Communicates effectively through written reports, well-organized presentations, and oral discussions

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a valid driver's license
- Must pass background investigation and requirements for access at Southern Nuclear and CIP Medium Transmission facilities.
- Must serve an on-call rotation and be available to work outside normal business hours.
- Travel overnight 25% of time
- Must live in or be willing to relocate to commutable distance of the Birmingham, Alabama office location.
