About this role

JOB SUMMARY:
The Vet Services Assistant supports the daily operations of Clemson Veterinary Services. Under the direction and supervision of veterinarians and veterinary technicians, this position performs animal care and veterinary assistant duties, assists with field service calls and clinic visits, and provides administrative and operational support to the ambulatory services and/or community clinic team. This position does not require a veterinary technician license.

JOB DUTIES:
20% - Client Support:

Provide courteous and professional customer service to Vet Services clients.

Communicate routine information regarding appointments, service logistics, preparation instructions, and follow-up as directed by veterinary staff.

Assist with client education by providing approved educational materials and reinforcing instructions provided by veterinarians or veterinary technicians.

Build positive relationships with clients and promptly refer medical questions, complaints, or concerns to the appropriate veterinary staff or supervisor.

Support outreach and client education activities involving veterinarians and professional veterinary students.

20% - Safety and Compliance:

Follow established protocols for animal handling, patient safety, infection control, workplace safety, and equipment use.

Help maintain a safe environment for animals, clients, students, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and staff.

Assist with maintaining accurate medical, inventory, equipment, and service-call records.

Report changes in animal condition, safety concerns, equipment problems, and operational issues promptly to the supervising veterinarian, veterinary technician, or supervisor.

Assist with compliance-related record-keeping and other administrative activities under supervision.

Participate in training and continuous improvement activities related to Vet Services operations.

60% - Technical and Operational Support:

Support the daily operations of the Vet Services areas, promoting efficient workflow and excellent customer service.

Accompany veterinarians on service calls and assist with non-licensed duties such as animal restraint, patient preparation, equipment setup, cleaning, and post-procedure care, as directed.

Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with procedures within the scope of training and applicable regulations.

Support the clinical education of professional veterinary students by assisting with demonstrations, equipment preparation, animal handling, and other activities under the direction of veterinary faculty or staff.

Enter and update information in the electronic medical record system as directed by veterinarians or veterinary technicians.

Maintain, clean, and organize ambulatory vehicles, community clinic spaces, equipment, instruments, and supplies.

Monitor inventory, restock supplies, and notify the supervisor when materials are low or equipment needs attention.

Assist with scheduling appointments, coordinating service calls, preparing paperwork, and responding to routine client inquiries.

Participate in an after-hours or on-call rotation, as assigned, to provide logistical and animal care support under the direction of the Vet Services team.

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma and experience in agricultural research or animal care that is directly related to the area of employment. An associate degree in animal health technology or a discipline related to agriculture may be substituted for the required work experience.

Ability to live 50+ pounds and work with horses, cattle, and small ruminants safely.

Preferred Requirements:

3-5+ years of experience in large animal ambulatory service or large animal care and management.

Fundamental working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to apply in varied situations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Not responsible for supervising employees.

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL:
Normal Operations - Required to follow emergency facility closure and modified operations directives, and not normally expected to work on-site during emergency situations.
