Job Title: Survey Crew Chief Job Description The Survey Crew Chief leads field survey operations on a variety of large-scale construction projects, ensuring accurate data collection, staking, and utility mapping that meet client specifications and industry standards. This role operates conventional survey equipment, coordinates closely with office staff, and provides field leadership to manage crews and represent the company professionally on job sites. Responsibilities
- Maintain and operate conventional survey equipment, including GPS units, robotic instruments, and total stations to support construction and survey activities.
- Operate data collectors to perform as-built surveys, construction stakeouts, and establish survey control in accordance with client specifications and project requirements.
- Backup tablet and data collector information regularly and ensure all data is organized and input according to established file structures and company standards.
- Coordinate daily with office staff to translate, process, and deliver field data accurately and on time for project documentation and design support.
- Perform closed level loops to a third-order accuracy (1:10,000) and establish survey control to the same degree of accuracy for project sites.
- Read and interpret construction plans, drawings, and specifications to guide field layout, staking, and utility mapping activities.
- Accurately perform as-built surveys and mapping of utilities, including complete utility layouts to support excavations and dig permits.
- Receive staking requests from clients and internal stakeholders and execute them precisely, following directions from project leadership.
- Provide field leadership to manage survey crews, organize daily tasks, and represent the company professionally on job sites with clients and contractors.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, demonstrate professionalism in all interactions, and contribute to a positive, team-oriented work culture.
- Comply with all safety requirements, including OSHA regulations, and promote safe work practices in the field.
- Participate in internal meetings and complete necessary documentation and reporting from the job trailer or office as required.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of two years of general survey practice, with experience in construction staking considered a plus.
- Proficiency in operating conventional survey equipment, including GPS, robotic instruments, and total stations.
- Experience with data collection for as-builts, stakeouts, topographic mapping, and boundary surveys.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications accurately.
- Skill in performing closed level loops and establishing control to third-order accuracy (1:10,000).
- Field leadership qualities to manage survey crews and represent the company on job sites with clients.
- Ability to use data collectors and tablets and follow established file structures for data backup and input.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with office staff and project stakeholders.
- Commitment to complying with safety requirements, including OSHA standards.
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

Work Environment This role operates primarily in the field on large construction sites for a small, family-owned, team-oriented business that values personality, kindness, and strong core values. The Survey Crew Chief reports directly to the Survey Manager and spends most of the time on job sites, with limited office time except for internal meetings and documentation in the job trailer. The position involves daily travel to and from job sites and requires working outdoors in changing weather conditions. Typical hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional Saturdays and overtime as needed. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $37.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
