About this role

Description

Would you like to be an engineer who builds the systems that power advertising at scale, rather than one who just operates them? Amazon Ads is dedicated to driving measurable outcomes for brands, agencies, and publishers. Within Amazon Ads, the SupplyTech organization builds and operates a suite of supply-side systems and the infrastructure that connects publisher inventory to advertiser demand. Our systems process billions of advertising queries every day, where latency, reliability, and quality translate directly into publisher revenue and customer trust.

We are looking for a Senior System Development Engineer, operating as a Site Reliability Engineer, to raise the reliability bar for SupplyTech's most critical, high-throughput production systems. This is a senior individual-contributor role that blends deep software engineering with operational ownership: you will design and build the automation, tooling, and self-healing systems that keep supply-side services reliable at massive scale — and you will set the reliability strategy that multiple teams build against.

You will own and monitor service-level objectives for business-critical systems, lead the engineering response to complex, high-severity issues and drive systemic elimination of operational toil. You will influence the operability of new services before they launch and act as a force multiplier.

Key job responsibilities
Own the reliability, availability, and performance of business-critical PubTech services end-to-end — including SLO/SLA definition, error budgets, and the operational roadmap.

- Design and build automation frameworks, tooling, and self-healing mechanisms (primarily in Python, Java, or Go) that eliminate entire classes of operational toil across teams.
- Lead root-cause analysis for complex, high-severity incidents across the ad-serving pipeline; implement durable long-term fixes and drive correction-of-error (COE) processes to prevent recurrence.

- Design and implement scalable monitoring, alarming, telemetry, and diagnostic solutions for complex distributed systems operating under real-time latency constraints.

- Define and drive operational readiness reviews for new services and features, embedding reliability, observability, and operability standards before launch.
- Partner with software development teams to build a durable runbook and knowledge base.

- Mentor and develop engineers — including other senior ICs — raising the technical and operational bar through design reviews, code reviews, and coaching.

Basic Qualifications

- Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large-scale infrastructure
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Experience with Linux/Unix
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines build processes

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with distributed systems at scale
