About this role
As a Battery E-Chem Test Technician, you will play a critical role in advancing Tesla’s battery technology by executing high-precision testing on current and next generation battery cells. You will work closely with engineering teams to design, implement, and troubleshoot experimental test protocols under electrical, thermal, and mechanical stress conditions. Your hands-on expertise will directly contribute to improving cell performance, safety, longevity, and manufacturability.
Works in conjunction with test engineers to execute complex electrochemical testing protocols (e.g., characterization tests, charge/discharge cycling, impedance spectroscopy, calendar aging) on battery cells across multiple form factors Perform real-time monitoring and troubleshooting of test equipment (e.g., battery cyclers, thermal chambers, data loggers) to ensure data integrity and test continuity Maintain meticulous records in shared platforms (SharePoint, Jira, Teams) and ensure compliance with safety standards, SOPs, and lab protocols Performs initial troubleshooting of tester and connections related to test execution failures. Recommendation of next steps where issue is not resolved Identify, document, and escalate anomalies in test execution, equipment behavior, or cell performance—providing actionable insights to engineering teams Collaborate with engineers to refine test procedures, improve repeatability, and enhance equipment reliability and safety Proactively suggest process improvements in test setup, data capture, or workflow efficiency to increase throughput and data quality
Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience Practical knowledge of DC electrical theory is required Familiarity with Jira, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and Outlook for task tracking and collaboration Proficient in Excel, and experience with Python or MATLAB is a plus Hands-on experience with battery cyclers (e.g., Arbin, BioLogic, NewWare), data acquisition systems, and environmental test chambers is a plus Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high attention to detail and safety Exceptional problem-solving skills with a structured approach to diagnosing root causes in test failures or equipment malfunctions Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to clearly convey technical issues, results, and recommendations to engineers and managers Commitment to continuous improvement, safety-first mindset, and adaptability in a fast-paced working environment
