Job Title: Phlebotomist I Job Description
The Phlebotomist I plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling of samples, and contributing to a smooth and efficient workflow. This role involves direct patient interaction, adherence to established procedures and safety regulations, and collaboration with laboratory staff in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and care.
- Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is correct and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain sample integrity.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following proper procedures and protocols to maintain specimen quality.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
- Follow detailed procedures and protocols necessary for specimen transport to preserve the integrity of the samples.
- Troubleshoot routine issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations for improvement.
- Participate in training activities and assist in maintaining efficient work processes within the department.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety guidelines.
- Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support laboratory operations.
- Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Experience performing blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection with consistent accuracy.
- Ability to perform geriatric draws and hard sticks, with at least 6 months to 1 year of related experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry and documentation tasks.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 02 years of overall relevant experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Level 1 Phlebotomist qualification or equivalent experience.
- High-volume draw experience, preferably in a busy lab or hospital setting.
- Attention to detail in matching requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying patient and test information.
- Ability to follow complex protocols for specimen handling, storage, and transport.
- Comfort working with diverse patient populations, including geriatric patients and those with difficult veins.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to ongoing training and adherence to departmental procedures and regulatory standards.
Work Environment
This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where high volumes of blood draws and specimen collections are performed daily. The role involves frequent direct interaction with patients, including geriatric individuals and those requiring hard sticks, and requires a professional, courteous, and patient-focused demeanor. Work is performed in compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations and established safety protocols, with regular participation in annual department trainings. The environment includes routine use of computers and Microsoft Office applications for data entry and documentation, as well as laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen storage units. Staff follow standard clinical attire and hygiene practices appropriate for a healthcare and laboratory setting, and must be comfortable working around biological specimens and following strict procedures to maintain specimen integrity and overall workplace safety.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
