About this role
Join Axon and be a Force for Good.
At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.
Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.
Your Impact
You will be part of a high-impact engineering team that develops embedded software for Axon devices, ensuring critical evidence is captured during mission-essential moments for our customers. This is an opportunity to work alongside talented software and firmware engineers and contribute to the creation of next-generation public safety products, including body-worn cameras, in-car audio-video systems, TASERs, wireless microphones, and more.
As a Firmware Validation Engineer I, you are a key quality voice for one or more Axon products, partnering with firmware, software, and hardware engineering to ship products customers can trust. You'll own testing for your product area with increasing independence, contribute to departmental testing standards, and help leadership make informed calls on coverage, bug severity, and release risk. Your work directly shapes product quality, customer trust, and release timelines.
Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Reports to: Software Engineering Manager
Direct Reports: N/A
What You'll Do:
- Own execution of release regression (manual and automated), exploratory testing, as well as impacted areas for individual new features, scoping coverage to risk and release timelines.
- Design and maintain the test strategy for assigned products/domains: test case creation and prioritization, and traceability from requirements (PRD/Jira) through to test cases in a test management system (e.g., Zephyr Scale).
- Partner with engineering under the shift-left model: review dev-authored test plans and acceptance tests, flag coverage gaps, and own the testing that engineering can't do alone (regression, exploratory, and specialized/environmental/vehicle testing).
- Investigate and document defects; represent QA in bug triage, pushing back on premature “won’t fix” calls with reproducible evidence and customer-impact data.
- Lead release-readiness reporting including feature quality reports, test execution status, and production-vs-staging escape analysis to inform go/no-go decisions.
- Identify and drive test tooling and process improvements (dashboards for regression/performance monitoring, new test-equipment integrations, AI-assisted test case generation) to increase coverage and efficiency.
- Coordinate with Engineering, PM/TPM, and hardware/RF labs to resolve scheduling, access, and documentation gaps that block testing.
- Manage multiple concurrent test cycles and releases with minimal oversight, setting priorities across competing deadlines.
What You Bring
- 3+ years in software, firmware, or hardware quality assurance / validation engineering, ideally on complex, multi-component products.
- Experience with embedded or connected-device products (firmware and hardware-software integration).
- Hands-on experience with test case design, test execution, and automated testing methodologies.
- Working experience within a test management and requirements-traceability practice, using Jira, Zephyr Scale (or equivalent), and log analysis tools (e.g., Splunk).
- Working knowledge of scripting/automation (Python or similar) and CI/CD-integrated test frameworks.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Familiarity with hardware and environmental test methods: RF, GPS/GNSS, environmental chambers, and connectivity (LTE/Wi-Fi) testing is preferred.
- Experience using AI tools for test case generation, traceability, and test data analysis is highly preferred.
