Job Title: Design Engineer Job Description
The Design Engineer develops, modifies, and supports equipment designs for automated material handling systems, creating detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models while collaborating closely with cross-functional engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Design and modify equipment for automated material handling systems, ensuring reliability, safety, and performance.
- Develop 3D models, layouts, and installation drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD to support engineering and installation activities.
- Support system studies and conceptual designs for automation and conveyor projects, contributing to technical solutions and feasibility assessments.
- Coordinate with controls, automation, and commissioning teams throughout project execution to ensure integrated and functional system designs.
- Troubleshoot and improve equipment designs during manufacturing, installation, and startup phases, resolving mechanical and design issues as they arise.
- Update drawings and documentation to produce accurate as-built packages that reflect final installed configurations.
- Develop technical documentation, including maintenance procedures, troubleshooting guides, and mechanical manuals for end users and internal teams.
- Research new materials, components, and technologies to enhance system performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Collaborate with internal engineering teams to ensure designs align with customer requirements, project objectives, and industry standards.
- Support field installations and startup activities as needed, providing on-site technical assistance and design clarification.
- Manage design tasks in a fast-paced environment, effectively prioritizing and supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology preferred.
- At least 2 years of engineering design experience in a relevant field.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and mechanical design.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD for layouts and installation drawings.
- Experience creating detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models suitable for manufacturing and installation.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing, automation, or material handling equipment and related mechanical systems.
- Technical writing and documentation experience, including procedures and manuals.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional engineering and project teams.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate project activities and work with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced engineering environment supporting multiple projects simultaneously.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with automated material handling systems and conveyor projects.
- Background in equipment troubleshooting during manufacturing, installation, and startup.
- Familiarity with researching and evaluating new materials, components, and technologies for system improvement.
- Ability to develop maintenance procedures and troubleshooting guides for mechanical systems.
- Strong attention to detail when updating drawings and creating accurate as-built documentation.
- Collaborative mindset and ability to work closely with controls, automation, and commissioning teams.
Work Environment
This role is primarily based in an office and on-site environment, with typical working hours of either 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position involves close collaboration with engineering and project teams and may require occasional support at field installation and startup locations. There is a policy in place for inclement weather, and while there is no formal weekly or monthly work-from-home arrangement, occasional flexibility may be available depending on project needs. The environment is fast-paced, focused on engineering design and project execution for automation and material handling systems.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Maryland Heights, MO.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $39.00 - $44.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
