About this role
Key Responsibilities
- Perform structural analysis and design of prestressed and reinforced concrete products.
- Design products in accordance with applicable codes, standards, customer specifications, and project requirements.
- Evaluate wind, ice, equipment, handling, transportation, erection, and other applicable loading conditions.
- Apply ASCE 7-16, ASCE 7-22, or equivalent governing load standards as appropriate.
- Apply applicable concrete design standards, industry requirements, and accepted engineering practices.
- Occasionally support the analysis and design of steel poles, structures, or components used in highway, traffic, lighting, utility, or similar applications.
- Support steel design in accordance with applicable AASHTO specifications and other governing standards when required.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, design documentation, drawings, specifications, and technical submittals.
- Review customer specifications, contract documents, and project requirements to identify applicable design criteria.
- Work closely with drafting and detailing personnel to translate engineering requirements into accurate production drawings.
- Provide engineering support to manufacturing, quality, sales, estimating, project management, and other internal departments.
- Assist manufacturing facilities with technical questions, product issues, nonconforming conditions, and design-related problem-solving.
- Communicate with customers, consulting engineers, municipalities, state agencies, departments of transportation, and other project stakeholders.
- Participate in product development, design improvement, standardization, cost reduction, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Visit manufacturing facilities to understand production processes, support problem-solving, and improve product designs.
- Occasionally travel to customer, project, or field locations as business needs require.
- Perform other engineering duties consistent with the needs of the department.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Strong understanding of engineering mechanics, statics, strength of materials, and structural analysis.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, codes, and technical requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with technical and nontechnical team members.
- Willingness to learn new products, design methods, software, codes, standards, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet project deadlines.
- Willingness to travel periodically to manufacturing facilities and, on occasion, customer or project locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer license in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.
- Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and Engineer-in-Training or Engineering Intern designation.
- Experience with prestressed concrete, reinforced concrete, concrete poles, utility structures, transportation structures, lighting structures, or similar engineered products.
- Familiarity with ASCE 7 and applicable concrete design standards.
- Experience performing wind-load, flexural, shear, serviceability, stability, handling, transportation, or foundation-related calculations.
- Knowledge of prestressing methods, reinforcing steel, concrete materials, connections, or embedded components.
- Experience with structural analysis or finite-element-analysis software.
- Experience working with concrete or steel manufacturing operations, production drawings, quality requirements, or fabrication processes.
- Familiarity with AASHTO specifications or structural steel design is beneficial but not required.
- Experience communicating with customers, consulting engineers, municipalities, state agencies, or departments of transportation.
- Working knowledge of CAD, engineering calculation software, or document-control systems.
