About Your Role
The Civil Inspector – Airport/Aviation provides field inspection, quality assurance, documentation, and construction oversight for civil and infrastructure improvements at an active airport.
The Civil Inspector will monitor contractor activities to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, contract requirements, applicable codes, safety standards, and airport requirements. This position will work closely with airport representatives, contractors, engineers, construction managers, project managers, and other stakeholders throughout the construction process.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience inspecting airport, airfield, roadway, utility, paving, concrete, drainage, or other heavy civil construction projects .
Responsibilities
- Perform daily field inspections of civil construction activities within an active airport environment.
- Inspect roadway, paving, grading, drainage, utilities, concrete, excavation, underground infrastructure, and related civil work.
- Monitor construction activities for compliance with approved plans, specifications, drawings, and contract documents.
- Verify contractor workmanship and materials meet project quality requirements.
- Observe and document construction progress through daily inspection reports, photographs, field notes, and other project documentation.
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, project managers, airport operations, and other project stakeholders.
- Identify deficiencies, non-conforming work, and potential construction issues and communicate findings to project management.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, and approved changes as required.
- Verify quantities and completed work for progress and payment documentation.
- Monitor construction activities for compliance with project safety requirements.
- Support testing and inspection activities involving concrete, asphalt, soil, utilities, and other civil materials.
- Participate in project meetings, field walks, punch-list inspections, and final acceptance activities.
- Maintain accurate and organized inspection records.
- Perform work in accordance with airport security, badging, escort, and operational requirements.
- Coordinate construction activities occurring near active roadways, terminals, airfield facilities, or secure airport areas.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of construction inspection experience , preferably involving civil, heavy civil, transportation, public works, or airport construction.
- Previous airport or aviation construction experience strongly preferred .
- Experience inspecting one or more of the following:
Roadways
- Runways and taxiways
- Airfield paving
- Concrete
- Asphalt
- Grading
- Drainage
- Stormwater systems
- Underground utilities
- Excavation
- Site development
- Strong knowledge of construction plans, drawings, specifications, and inspection procedures.
- Ability to document construction activities through detailed daily reports.
- Strong communication and coordination skills.
- Ability to work in an active construction and airport environment.
- Ability to work varying shifts, including nights or weekends, when required by project activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on projects for an airport authority, aviation agency, or major commercial airport.
- Knowledge of FAA requirements and airport construction standards .
- Experience with large-scale capital improvement programs.
- Public works or transportation infrastructure inspection experience.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- ACI, ICC, NICET, or other applicable inspection certifications.
- Experience with construction management software and electronic inspection/documentation systems.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Relevant construction inspection experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk active construction sites for extended periods.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access active construction areas as required.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to work around active construction equipment and airport operations.
