ABOUT THE ROLE
The Communications Coordinator reports to the Communications Director and supports the External Affairs Department of DC PCSB in developing and distributing clear, engaging content across DC PCSB’s communications platforms. The Communications Coordinator will write and edit content, produce email communications, support social media and website updates, and create graphics that reflect DC PCSB’s brand. The coordinator will also maintain media and distribution lists, help keep communications projects on schedule, and assist with events and major publications such as the annual report. Ideally, candidates should have 2–4 years of relevant experience, strong writing and organizational skills, and attention to detail, and be professionally curious and passionate about public education and DC’s public charter school sector.
Core Responsibilities
- Assist in writing, editing, and posting content for blog posts, newsletters, social media, and the DC PCSB website.
- Build, format, test, and distribute email newsletters and announcements using Mailchimp or a similar email marketing platform.
- Develop graphics using established templates and brand standards.
- Support the layout, design, and visual presentation of digital communications to ensure they are engaging, accessible, and consistent with DC PCSB’s brand.
- Track assignments, deadlines, reviews, and approvals to help communications projects remain on schedule.
- Help collect, organize, and track content for the annual report and other key publications.
- Assist with drafting and formatting memos, presentations, talking points, and other communications materials.
- Work with the External Affairs Department and other departments to support consistent messaging and branding across platforms.
- Monitor local and national education news, social media conversations, and community feedback, share relevant insights with the team, and help identify opportunities to highlight DC PCSB’s work.
- Track and report on basic performance metrics for email, social media, and the website to help the team measure the effectiveness of its communications.
- Maintain and update media contacts, key contact lists, and email distribution lists.
- Coordinate logistics and provide staffing support for events, conferences, and other public-facing activities, such as the summer graduation event.
- Provide administrative and project support to the Communications Team as needed.

## Job Competencies
Messaging and Storytelling: You have strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills and demonstrated experience writing for diverse audiences across different mediums, with the ability to tell compelling stories about DC PCSB’s impact and the value of public charter schools.
Brand Management: You pay attention to detail and apply brand standards, templates, and style guidelines to ensure messaging and visuals remain consistent across all external communications.
Quality Management: You carefully proofread and fact-check content, following established review and approval processes to ensure every communications product meets DC PCSB’s quality standards.
Task and Timeline Management: You’re organized, driven, and creative, and can manage multiple projects, deadlines, and approvals at the same time to keep communications work on schedule.
Digital Strategy: You have hands-on experience with an email marketing platform (e.g., Mailchimp), a website content management system, and design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite, and can help put digital communication plans into action. Familiarity with digital accessibility best practices (e.g., alt text, plain language) is a plus.
Social Media Strategy: You have experience creating, scheduling, and posting content across social media channels and are eager to help carry out strategies that engage DC PCSB’s target audiences.
Data Analysis for Communications: You’re comfortable pulling and reviewing basic metrics (e.g., email open and click rates, social media engagement, website traffic) and sharing insights that help the team adjust its tactics.
Community Listening: You’re curious about what families, schools, and community members are saying and can gather and organize feedback and trends to inform engagement strategies.
Qualifications:
2–4 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related role.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
You’re a team player who takes initiative to make things happen and values building solid relationships to collaborate fully on projects.
You must express comfort and willingness to discuss, learn, and implement DC PCSB’s Mission, Vision, and Values, using them to build relationships, navigate conversations, and engage in continuous learning
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This role requires the employee to work in the DC PCSB office or at DC PCSB schools, events, or other designated locations at least three days per week. The remaining workdays may be performed remotely, consistent with DC PCSB’s hybrid work policy and the department's needs.
The employee must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 10 pounds and perform occasional physical activities associated with events, meetings, and other communications activities, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary is competitive and commensurate with prior experience in a similar role. DC PCSB offers a comprehensive benefits plan covering 100% of the employee’s insurance premium. To foster fair compensation practices within our organization, there is a non-negotiation policy built into our compensation system. The salary for this role is $62,507 – $71,031.
