About this role
The Substation Power Equipment Engineer job family supports the reliability, maintenance, testing, and improvement of electric substation equipment. Positions progress from entry-level assignments to independent technical leadership of complex work and projects.
Associate Engineer
The Associate Engineer performs entry-level engineering work with moderate supervision while developing foundational technical, planning, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Essential Functions for All Levels: Analyze and resolve Substation Operations issues; plan and monitor work; prepare technical calculations, reports, and records; support utility partners; apply applicable standards and procedures; coordinate with customers, contractors, and internal teams; and maintain technical and professional proficiency.
- 0 to 12 months of relevant engineering experience.
Required Qualifications for All Levels: Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology from an ABET-accredited program; ability to analyze technical issues, interpret drawings and standards, develop recommendations, communicate effectively, organize work, collaborate with stakeholders, and maintain a valid in-state driver’s license upon hire.
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Associate Engineer
- Engineer in Training certification within two years of hire.
- Interest in obtaining a Professional Engineer license within eight years of hire.
- Master's degree in business or engineering
Engineer 1
The Engineer 1 applies developing technical expertise with moderate supervision and assumes progressively more independent responsibility.
- At least one year of relevant engineering experience.

- Experience in the electric utility industry
- Professional Engineer Licensure Upon Hire
Engineer 2
Engineer 2 works with limited supervision to troubleshoot substation mechanical and electrical systems, develop test procedures, interpret drawings and test results, and apply engineering principles to equipment solutions.

- 2-4 years of electric utility experience.
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Engineer 2
- Experience with electric utility substation operations or power equipment.

Engineer 3
The Engineer 3 independently leads complex projects, manages competing priorities, guides technical personnel, corrects substation schematics and wiring diagrams, improves engineering standards, and explains complex issues to customers and contractors.

- 4-9 years of electric utility experience.

- Experience in the electric utility industry

Senior Engineer
The Senior Engineer serves as a technical authority, independently leading complex work and projects with broad organizational impact and applying advanced knowledge of substation systems, equipment maintenance, safety, standards, engineering principles, material science, and chemistry.
Required Qualifications for Senior Engineer
- At least 7+ years of electric utility experience.
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Senior Engineer
- Experience in the electric utility industry
- Professional Engineer Licensure Upon Hire
- PMP Certification Upon Hire
- Skilled in principles of project management
Substation Power Equipment Engineer Job Family Pay Ranges
- Associate Engineer or Engineer 1: $69,900–$105,000
- Engineer 2: $82,200–$123,200
- Engineer 3: $96,600–$144,900
- Senior Engineer: $113,500–$170,300
Placement will be based on education, relevant experience, technical proficiency, and scope of responsibility.

$113,500.00 - $170,300.00
*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience , as well as internal pay equity .
