About this role
Job Title: Clinical Research Coordinator Hematology Job Description
The Clinical Research Coordinator Hematology supports complex drug clinical trials by working directly with patients in a hematology-focused research setting. This role coordinates patient visits, conducts patient-facing research activities, and collaborates closely with research nurses and specialized disease-based teams. The coordinator contributes to patient recruitment, screening, and consent, and ensures accurate documentation and adherence to study protocols while benefiting from strong internal training, structured onboarding, and clear role definitions.
Responsibilities
- Conduct patient-facing clinical research activities, including coordinating and executing study visits for participants enrolled in hematology clinical trials.
- Work directly with patients to guide them through the research process, ensuring they understand visit schedules, procedures, and study expectations.
- Collaborate closely with research nurses during patient visits to support the delivery of protocol-specific procedures and assessments.
- Participate in patient recruitment efforts using methods such as referrals, tumor boards, and new consults, contributing to the identification of eligible participants.
- Review medical charts to assess eligibility based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and to ensure accurate and complete documentation for each study participant.
- Obtain informed consent from patients, ensuring they clearly understand the purpose, procedures, risks, and benefits of the clinical trials.
- Manage a defined patient load of approximately 10 participants, maintaining consistent communication, follow-up, and visit coordination.
- Aim to consent approximately 1215 patients per year, supporting enrollment goals across multiple hematology trials.
- Support all studies within the assigned hematology disease group rather than owning a single trial, contributing to a balanced and collaborative team workload.
- Coordinate and document patient vitals and perform basic clinical assessments, including taking vital signs and conducting electrocardiograms (EKGs), as required by study protocols.
- Maintain a working understanding of regulatory and data requirements, collaborating with dedicated data and regulatory teams while ensuring day-to-day activities align with compliance standards.
- Ensure adherence to clinical trial protocols, standard operating procedures, and institutional guidelines across all assigned studies.
- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team members within the disease-specific research group to support smooth trial operations and equitable distribution of patient load.
- Participate in internal training and development opportunities to enhance knowledge of clinical research, oncology, and hematology-specific trial procedures.
- Contribute to a structured, organized research environment by following defined roles and responsibilities that support manageable workloads and specialization within the team.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of clinical research experience in a patient-facing role, including consenting patients and conducting patient visits.
- Experience working on drug clinical trials with some level of complexity, in any therapeutic area.
- Demonstrated experience in patient recruitment, including involvement in identifying and screening potential participants.
- Proficiency in obtaining informed consent from patients for participation in clinical research studies.
- Ability to perform clinical skills such as taking patient vitals and conducting electrocardiograms (EKGs).
- Experience with chart review to assess eligibility and document clinical trial-related information.
- Familiarity with clinical trial operations and processes, including adherence to protocols and study requirements.
- Bachelors degree.
- Basic understanding of regulatory and data requirements in clinical research.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working directly with patients and collaborating with research nurses and multidisciplinary teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Clinical research certification such as SOCRA or ACRP, with the potential for higher compensation upon obtaining certification.
- Experience in oncology clinical research, particularly in hematology-focused or cancer-related trials.
- Exposure to or experience with Phase 1 clinical trials.
- Interest in developing specialized expertise within hematology and oncology disease groups.
- Motivation to engage in ongoing professional development through internal training and structured onboarding programs.
- Ability to adapt to different recruitment methods, including referrals, tumor boards, and new consults.
- Comfort working within a multi-study environment where responsibilities span multiple concurrent trials.
Work Environment
The role is based in a cancer center environment within a hematology-focused research team. The coordinator works standard 8-hour shifts, with start times typically between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., adjusted according to patient schedules. The position requires working onsite every day during the first three months to support onboarding, training, and integration with the team. After this initial period, the coordinator may work from home one day per week, while the remainder of the time remains onsite to support direct patient care and study activities. The work environment emphasizes structured onboarding, well-defined roles and responsibilities, and access to extensive internal training and development resources. The team-based structure distributes studies and patient loads evenly, promoting a manageable workload and allowing coordinators to specialize within their disease group.
