Job Title: Medical Assistant Job Description
This Medical Assistant role supports physicians and clinicians in a busy oncology clinic by providing hands-on patient care and essential clinical support. You help promote efficient patient flow, prepare patients and rooms for exams and procedures, and complete key administrative tasks such as maintaining schedules, handling patient records, and answering phones. You work in alignment with established compliance programs, codes of ethics, and business standards to ensure safe, high-quality care.
Responsibilities
- Escort patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment rooms in a courteous and timely manner.
- Record patient data before each physician visit, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and any changes in medications.
- Obtain all necessary patient records and documentation required by the physician prior to treatment or procedures.
- Prepare and stock exam and treatment rooms, ensuring supplies and equipment are available and organized.
- Assist physicians with documentation and setup for exams and procedures, following clinical protocols and instructions.
- Maintain exam and treatment room disinfection protocols to support a clean and safe clinical environment.
- Respond to patients calls and requests, relaying information or escalating concerns to nurses or physicians as needed.
- Perform administrative duties such as typing, filing, faxing, reception, and other clerical tasks as requested by supervisors or physicians.
- Alert nurses or physicians promptly when vital signs are abnormal or when patients share important clinical information.
- Collect inbound meaningful use data, including flu documentation and initial height and weight measurements.
- Print medication lists for patients to review and confirm accuracy during visits.
- Complete disability forms accurately and in a timely manner, following practice guidelines.
- Schedule blood transfusions and therapeutic phlebotomies as directed, coordinating with appropriate departments or facilities.
- Order special tests under provider direction, including but not limited to specific oncology-related tests.
- Enter orders under a providers direction and supervision in the electronic health record system, following regulatory and practice standards.
- Provide patient care and customer service that is compassionate, professional, and responsive to patient needs.
- Support and adhere to established compliance programs, including codes of ethics and business standards.
Essential Skills
- Minimum three years of experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification.
- Experience recording vital signs, height, weight, allergies, and medication changes.
- Ability to obtain and organize patient records prior to treatment or procedures.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy procedures (phlebotomy experience preferred).
- Skill in preparing and stocking exam and treatment rooms and maintaining disinfection protocols.
- Experience assisting physicians with exams, procedures, and clinical documentation.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and EMR systems.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and basic clinical workflows.
- Ability to perform administrative tasks such as typing, filing, faxing, and reception duties.
- Strong patient care and customer service skills in a healthcare setting.
- Ability to measure and document blood pressure and other vital signs accurately.
- Capacity to enter orders under provider direction with attention to detail and compliance.
- Physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift and assist patients, and occasionally lift and carry items up to 40 lbs.
- Manual and finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination, and corrected vision and hearing within normal range.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred.
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA) credential preferred.
- Phlebotomy experience preferred, particularly in an outpatient or oncology setting.
- Familiarity with oncology workflows, including scheduling blood transfusions and therapeutic phlebotomies.
- Experience ordering or coordinating specialized laboratory tests in collaboration with providers.
- Demonstrated ability to collect and document meaningful use data, including immunization and baseline measurements.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with patients, clinicians, and administrative staff.
- Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks such as scheduling, documentation, and room preparation.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical environment with a focus on accuracy and patient safety.
- Ability to comply with state-specific regulations and certifications required to work as a Medical Assistant.
Work Environment
This role is based in an oncology office operating Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You work primarily in exam rooms, treatment rooms, and clinical support areas, engaging directly with patients, physicians, and clinical staff throughout the day. The position requires standing and walking for extensive periods, handling and lifting patients, and occasionally lifting items up to 40 pounds. You use electronic health record systems, standard medical equipment for vital signs and phlebotomy, and typical office equipment for clerical tasks. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and adherence to disinfection protocols. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Silver Spring, MD.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
