Job Title: Architect Historic Preservation Specialist Job Description
This role focuses on architectural design and documentation with a strong emphasis on historic preservation. You will conduct field investigations, assess existing building conditions, and prepare detailed construction documents and technical reports. Working closely with multidisciplinary consultants and project managers, you will help plan, design, and execute preservation and revitalization projects for significant historic and non-historic structures across the United States.
Responsibilities
- Conduct field investigations, documentation, and measurement of existing historic and non-historic buildings.
- Perform building condition assessments and prepare detailed assessment reports.
- Develop accurate and comprehensive construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit.
- Prepare technical reports, studies, specifications, and preservation documentation to support project delivery.
- Coordinate with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and specialty consultants throughout all phases of project development.
- Support project managers in the planning, design, and execution of architectural projects, particularly those involving historic preservation.
- Participate in construction administration activities, including site visits, field observations, and responding to contractor questions and requests for information.
- Mentor and support junior staff members, providing guidance on technical tasks and professional development.
- Collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, consultants, and government agencies to achieve project goals and maintain strong working relationships.
- Travel periodically for project work throughout the region and across the United States to conduct fieldwork and support on-site project needs.
Essential Skills
- Professional Degree in Architecture or Master of Architecture from an accredited program.
- 610 years of architectural experience.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD.
- Proficiency in Revit.
- Experience with field measuring and existing conditions documentation.
- Experience conducting building condition assessments.
- Experience preparing technical reports, studies, and preservation documentation.
- Experience preparing detailed construction documents.
- Experience coordinating with structural, MEP, and specialty consultants.
- Experience providing construction administration and field observation services.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple project tasks and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

- Demonstrated interest in or experience with historic preservation projects.

Work Environment
This position offers the opportunity to work on high-profile historic preservation and revitalization projects nationwide, including facilities for federal agencies. The work environment combines office-based design and documentation with field-based investigations and construction administration. You will regularly use AutoCAD and Revit, along with other standard architectural tools, to produce construction documents, reports, and preservation documentation. The role includes periodic travel throughout the region and across the United States for site visits, field measurements, building condition assessments, and construction observation. You will collaborate closely with clients, contractors, consultants, and government agencies in a professional, team-oriented setting that values technical excellence, thorough documentation, and a strong commitment to preserving culturally and historically significant structures.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kansas City, MO.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.80 - $45.67/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
