Why You’ll Love This Role

The Electronics Component Engineer is responsible for the technical selection, qualification, approval, lifecycle management, and reliability oversight of electronic components used in company products. The position works closely with R&D, Supplier Quality, Procurement, Manufacturing, Compliance, and suppliers to ensure that components meet performance, quality, reliability, availability, regulatory, and long-term product-life requirements.

Key Responsibilities

- Act as the liaison between Engineering, Supplier Quality, and Sourcing to ensure manufacturable, reliable, and supply-secure product designs.
- Define and maintain component requirements, specifications, qualification standards, and approved vendor lists, including support for long-life products designed for 15+ years of continuous operation.
- Provide component-selection guidance during NPI and design activities, considering reliability, manufacturability, lifecycle, supplier capability, capacity, quality history, and supply-chain risks.
- Review BOMs for obsolescence, sole-source exposure, lifecycle status, geopolitical risks, and supply continuity; identify, evaluate, and qualify alternate or replacement components.
- Review and approve PCNs, SPCNs, EOL notices, last-time-buy proposals, manufacturer changes, and related CCR/CCB/ECO/MCO documentation.
- Maintain accurate component data, including manufacturer part numbers, lifecycle status, country of origin, MSL, RoHS/REACH compliance, and approved sources.
- Collect and assess supplier reliability, FIT/MTBF, MSL, and field-failure data; support failure analysis, root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and supplier escalations.
- Participate in supplier audits, technical reviews, and change-management activities.
- Establish controls for counterfeit, broker-sourced, and non-franchised components to protect quality, reliability, and traceability.
- Monitor component manufacturers, manufacturing locations, process changes, capacity constraints, and geopolitical and supply-chain risks.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Five or more years of experience with electronic components, component engineering, supplier quality, hardware engineering, or electronics manufacturing.
- Strong knowledge of electronic components, including: Resistors, capacitors, inductors, ferrite beads, and thermistors
- Diodes, MOSFETs, analog and digital ICs
- Microcontrollers, processors, FPGAs, memory, and power-management devices
- Crystals, oscillators, connectors, relays, and power supplies

- Experience interpreting component datasheets, drawings, specifications, application notes, and qualification reports.
- Experience with component qualification and reliability testing.
- Working knowledge of industry standards such as IEC, JEDEC, AEC-Q, ASTM, IPC, RoHS, REACH, and MSL requirements.
- Experience reviewing PCNs, EOL notices, datasheet changes, manufacturing-site changes, and supplier corrective actions.
- Ability to perform technical risk assessments and make clear component approval or rejection recommendations.
- Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, environmental, and reliability failure modes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with suppliers, design engineers, procurement, manufacturing, and management.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with telecom, datacom, optical networking, aerospace, medical, automotive, or other high-reliability products.
- Experience supporting products with long operating-life requirements.
- Experience with BOM management, PLM, ERP, lifecycle-management, or component intelligence tools.
- Familiarity with Agile, Accuris, SiliconExpert, Arena, Windchill, or similar systems.
- Experience with supplier audits and global component manufacturers.
- Knowledge of sulfur resistance, corrosion, contamination, tin whiskers, solderability, delamination, cracking, electromigration, and other electronics reliability risks.
- Experience with accelerated life testing, high-temperature testing, humidity testing, temperature cycling, HALT/HASS, and failure analysis.
- Familiarity with semiconductor process technologies, package construction, die revisions, and manufacturing-site transfers.
- Experience qualifying alternates and drop-in replacements.
- Knowledge of counterfeit-part prevention and broker-source controls.
