Company Overview
The Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC) provides safe and temporary housing for youth ages 10 – 18 with pending legal action in the Cook County Courts. The JTDC provides its youth with leadership, structured care, and supervision through a balanced approach of creative programming and services that teach responsibility, accountability, and sensitivity. Each member of the JTDC staff is actively encouraged and supported in pursuit of creative participation, personal well-being, and professional development.
 As the largest juvenile detention center in the nation, the facility contains five major departments and various offices consisting of 600+ employees who serve an average daily population of 280+ residents.

The Fire Safety Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of facility maintenance and facility safety support within the Environmental Services Department for the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center (JTDC). Assists with supervision, coordination and provision of laundry and custodial services.

Typical Duties
- Oversees, supervises, and ensures the implementation of all JTDC custodial and sanitation plans in compliance with federal, state, local, and JTDC policy. 
- Receive, review, record and ensure that work orders are sent to Department of Facilities Management (DFM) daily.
- Conducts routine inspections (i.e. inoperable rooms, sanitation deficiencies, etc.) of the JTDC facility and reports outcomes to leadership as required.
- Conduct Fire Safety Training for employees and contracted agency staff.
- Facilitate routine Fire Drills with Center Management on all shifts.
- Conduct meetings with Quality Assurance and Center Management as needed.
- Oversees coordination of Hygiene and Pest Control Services.
- Inspects facility fire safety apparatus with DFM Safety Officer to ensure compliance with local, state and federal safety standards and recommends corrective action as needed.
- Coordinates elevator keycard requests with DFM.
- Recommends and develops strategies to improve accountability and work performance. 
- Recommends appropriate corrective action (when necessary) proportionate to non-compliance of policies and/or procedures and/or performance issues and
- Monitors all assigned shift staff to ensure accountability within the assigned division. 
- Initiates inspections consistent with policy/procedures and where necessary, recommends any necessary corrective action.
- Administers Safety and Sanitation program while assuming responsibility for the safety and security of staff assigned to perform custodial and laundry functions.
- Assists with coordinating laundry services in the facility.
- May perform custodial duties as needed to ensure custodial services are provided according to approved facility sanitation plan.
- Reports incidents and rule violations, in accordance with policies and procedures, to the Director of Environmental Services or Supervisor in Charge.
- Identifies and conducts training that is responsive to the continued professional development of staff and recommends suggestions for improvement to the Director of Environmental Services.
- Prepares and updates the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) file.
- Follow the directives of the Director of Environmental Services.
- Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required. Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Social Services, or other related Human Services field preferred. 
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

- Must have previous experience preferably in social services, building trades or facility management.
- Minimum three years’ experience working in large public or private sector facilities.

- United States citizenship.
- 21 years of age at the time of application submission.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Effectively communicates verbally and in writing in a coherent manner through reports , and memorandums, both internally and with external agency contacts
- Previous supervisory experience working in an institutional environment.  Preference to those with previous experience working in juvenile direct care.
- Ability to readily recognize emergency facility maintenance issues. 
- Ability to recommend and take corrective actions.
- Ability to effectively listen, understand, and communicate (verbally and in writing) at the appropriate level with Division and direct-care staff.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands and to be flexible, creative, proactive, and effective under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly accountable, reliable, and prompt, with a strong work ethic.
- Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrates skills in database creation and maintenance.
- Bilingual communication skills preferred.

Physical Requirements

- Ability to move and lift furniture, equipment, refuse, laundry and containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to exercise safety and care in the provision of custodial and laundry services.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemical s and compounds.
- Extended periods of walking throughout the facility.
- Extended periods of standing.
- Ability to effectively operate and utilize a computer.
- Ability to effectively communicate (hear and respond) 10 codes through the intercom/radio transmission monitoring system.
- Must be flexible with work schedule to perform fire drills and training for all shifts.
- Must be able to work overtime based on departmental needs.

Hiring Requirements
- Illinois residency obtained within 90 days of date of hire.
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check including but not limited to LEADS, CANTS, and professional references.
- A result of negative from the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Child Abuse Registry.
-      Open availability to work any shift at a 24-hour facility (includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays).
- Must pass Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) screening requirements.
