The Specialist, Anesthesia is responsible for providing high-quality perioperative anesthesia care to patients undergoing surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. The role involves pre-anesthetic assessment, administration of anesthesia, intraoperative monitoring, post-anesthesia management, pain control, and participation in emergency response activities, while ensuring patient safety and adherence to clinical and regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive pre-anesthetic evaluations, including assessment of medical history, physical condition, and perioperative risks.
- Develop individualized anesthesia care plans tailored to patient needs and procedural requirements.
- Administer general, regional, local, and monitored anesthesia care in accordance with approved clinical privileges.
- Monitor patients during surgical and procedural interventions to ensure physiological stability and optimal outcomes.
- Manage airway interventions, hemodynamic monitoring, and perioperative complications.
- Provide post-anesthesia care and ensure safe recovery through ongoing evaluation and appropriate clinical interventions.
- Participate in acute and chronic pain management services, including multidisciplinary care planning when required.
- Respond to emergency situations such as cardiac arrests, trauma activations, and critical care events.
- Collaborate closely with surgeons, nursing teams, intensivists, and allied health professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, patient safety programs, and departmental performance activities.
- Support education, training, and mentoring of junior medical staff and healthcare professionals when appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with Department of Health (DOH), hospital accreditation standards, infection prevention protocols, and organizational policies.
Qualifications
- MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution.
- Completion of a recognised specialty qualification in Anesthesiology as per applicable Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR).
- Minimum of 2 years of post-specialty qualification experience as a Specialist in Anesthesia.
- Experience in perioperative care, critical care support, emergency airway management, and pain management.
- DOH Licence or Eligibility as Specialist Anesthesia.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications; Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of contemporary anesthesia practices, patient safety principles, and perioperative medicine.
- Excellent clinical judgement, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-acuity clinical environment.
