About this role

Work Flexibility: Onsite

This role is for SFTC-PV for a Senior Staff Engineer with experience in Embedded Systems. You will provide technical leadership for the architecture, design, development, integration, verification, and lifecycle support of embedded software for innovative medical-device platforms. You will solve complex, system-level problems; establish reusable technical approaches; influence product and platform roadmaps; and guide cross-functional teams in translating clinical, system, hardware, cybersecurity, and regulatory needs into safe, robust, and scalable solutions. This role combines deep hands-on expertise in real-time embedded development, low-level software, motor-control applications, hardware–software integration, and verification with broad technical ownership, mentoring, and decision-making across multiple projects.

What you will do:

Technical Responsibilities

- Provide technical leadership for the architecture, design, development, integration, test, release, and maintenance of scalable embedded software for medical-device and electromechanical systems.Own critical technical decisions and system-level trade-offs across software, electronics, controls, FPGA, cybersecurity, usability, and product performance.
- Define embedded software architecture, interfaces, technology roadmaps, reusable platforms, engineering standards, and long-term modernization strategies across products and programs.Develop and review production-quality firmware and low-level software in C and C++ for ARM-based microcontrollers, microprocessors, DSPs, and FPGA-enabled platforms.
- Architect and implement closed-loop control solutions, including motor-control and PID algorithms, with deterministic hard real-time performance, safety, and reliability.Lead development and debugging of board support packages, bootloaders, device drivers, hardware abstraction layers, middleware, and low-level communication interfaces.
- Guide development on real-time operating systems and embedded Linux platforms, including scheduling, concurrency, memory management, inter-process communication, system performance, and reliability optimization.
- Define and troubleshoot interfaces and protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, and other wired or wireless communications as applicable.Translate clinical, system, software, and hardware needs into architecture, requirements, detailed designs, interfaces, implementation plans, and verification strategies.
- Champion object-oriented design, design patterns, modular architecture, coding standards, defensive programming, secure-software practices, and design for testability and maintainability.Partner with electrical and systems engineers to review schematics, datasheets, timing diagrams, component specifications, board designs, failure modes, and hardware–software integration risks.
- Lead board bring-up, performance characterization, and complex root-cause analysis using JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, protocol analyzers, and related laboratory tools.Establish unit, integration, system, automated, hardware-in-the-loop, code-coverage, static-analysis, and regression-test strategies; ensure adequate evidence and traceability.
- Lead architecture reviews, design reviews, code reviews, risk reviews, failure investigations, and technical readiness assessments; document decisions, alternatives, and trade-offs.Drive technical estimation, dependency and risk management, sprint and release planning, configuration management, build automation, and continuous integration/continuous delivery practices.
- Resolve ambiguous or high-impact defects, field issues, performance limitations, cybersecurity concerns, and product risks; guide teams toward sustainable corrective and preventive solutions.Lead proofs of concept, technology assessments, platform modernization, component-obsolescence strategies, design simplification, cost improvements, and engineering-process improvements.
- Ensure high-quality engineering artifacts, including requirements, architecture and design documentation, interface specifications, source code, test evidence, traceability, technical reports, and lifecycle records.Serve as a technical mentor and subject-matter expert; grow engineering capability through coaching, design guidance, knowledge sharing, and constructive technical challenge. Influence global, cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders without direct authority; communicate technical strategy, risks, decisions, and progress clearly and credibly.

What You Need:

Required skills:

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Typically 12-14 years of professional software-development experience, including extensive hands-on embedded-product development and technical leadership of complex or safety-critical systems.  Expert-level programming skills in embedded C and C++, with a demonstrated record of delivering production-quality software under stringent resource, timing, safety, and reliability constraints.Deep experience with microcontroller and microprocessor architectures, real-time operating systems, embedded Linux, board support packages, bootloaders, device drivers, and hardware–software integration.

- Demonstrated ability to define software or system architecture, lead complex technical investigations, evaluate technologies, make cross-functional trade-offs, and drive decisions from concept through product release and sustaining support.
- Extensive experience developing, integrating, and debugging hardware-dependent software using laboratory instruments, hardware debuggers, and disciplined root-cause analysis.
- Strong knowledge of requirements engineering, software design, verification, risk management, configuration management, version control, defect management, and product lifecycle processes.Proven ability to lead through influence, mentor engineers, communicate with senior stakeholders, and collaborate in a global, cross-functional, matrixed environment.Excellent analytical, problem-solving, technical writing, presentation, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to bring clarity to ambiguous and complex problems.

Good to have skills:

- Experience with Agile development, Git-based workflows, CI/CD platforms, automated builds, static analysis, unit-test frameworks, and requirements or application-lifecycle-management tools.Experience with model-based design, MATLAB/Simulink, hardware-in-the-loop environments, formal methods, or automated test frameworks.

- Experience supporting the full product lifecycle, including new product development, sustaining engineering, product complaints, CAPA, obsolescence, production support, and post-market improvements.
- Experience evaluating external technologies, suppliers, development partners, or acquired product architectures and integrating them into an enterprise product ecosystem.
- Strong knowledge of medical-device software development and applicable standards, including IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601, and relevant FDA or international regulatory expectations.
- Experience leading technical content for regulatory submissions, design assurance, risk management, cybersecurity assessments, or product safety activities.
