Sr. Quality Engineer, Cell Manufacturing

Tesla is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer in Cell Manufacturing to own Problem-Solving investigation across shops and steer cross-functional teams to durable solutions. The ideal candidate leads complex quality and process failure analyses that start in one shop and surface in another, convenes the right people, structures the investigation, and drives actions to verified closure while production keeps moving.

This is not a single-shop quality role. You connect shops, align engineering, production, maintenance, and supplier partners, and turn a recurring defect into a closed investigation with a proven fix.

- Own end-to-end root cause for priority issues that cross shop boundaries, from first escape through verified effectiveness
- Separate where the defect is created from where it is detected. Use 8D, 5-Why, fishbone, fault tree, and process data so the team does not stop at the shop that found the issue
- Stand up containment immediately, then drive permanent corrective and preventive actions with named owners, due dates, and effectiveness checks
- Reject weak root causes and incomplete actions. Do not close an investigation until the mechanism is proven and the fix holds in production
- Run the problem-solving forum, escalate blockers, and keep leadership aligned on risk, status, and the next decision
- Turn findings into engineered solutions: process changes, control-plan updates, poka-yoke, equipment modifications, and standardized work
- Steer option selection, risk review (including FMEA), and implementation through Process Change Approval
- Prioritize the open-problem portfolio with leading and lagging metrics: recurrence, containment aging, time-to-root-cause, and time-to-permanent fix
- Coach shop-level problem owners so capability stays in the shops after the cross-shop issue is closed

- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years in quality, manufacturing, or process engineering in high-volume production, with a proven record of leading cross-functional root cause investigations to verified closure
- Demonstrated ability to steer engineers, technicians, and shop leaders to a decision and a shipped fix without direct authority
- Command of structured problem solving: 8D, DMAIC, 5-Why, Ishikawa, Measurement System Analysis, process capability, and DoE
- Data skills used to locate the creating process versus the detecting process (SQL, Tableau, JMP, Minitab, Python, MATLAB, R, or similar)
- Experience with ISO 9001, IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and control plans
- Experience introducing process or equipment changes into production and confirming they eliminated the failure mode
- Automotive or other high-volume, multi-process manufacturing is highly desired
- Clear communication skills. Comfortable presenting root cause, residual risk, and the ask to plant leadership
