Master Marine Technician / Senior Marine Technician

Location: 532 Central Dr. Virginia Beach, VA 23454
Employment Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $30–$45 per hour , based on experience, certifications, and demonstrated skill

Schedule: 40hrs. per week guaranteed. Shop hours are 7am-3:30pm

About the Position

We are a growing, independent marine service business with a team of approximately 14 technicians and 5 office staff. We provide boat repair, maintenance, rigging, commissioning, reconditioning, and technical support for both new and used boats.

We are looking for an experienced Master Marine Technician / Senior Marine Technician to join our team and serve as one of our highest-level technical resources.

This is a hands-on position for an experienced marine professional who enjoys solving difficult problems, performing quality work, and helping other technicians develop their skills. The ideal candidate has advanced knowledge of marine electrical and vessel systems and/or extensive outboard engine experience.

Candidates with ABYC Electrical and Systems certifications and/or manufacturer certifications from Mercury, Yamaha, Suzuki, or other major marine manufacturers are strongly encouraged to apply.

What You Will Do

Advanced Marine Diagnostics & Repair

• Diagnose and repair complex marine electrical, mechanical, propulsion, and vessel-system problems.

• Troubleshoot difficult and intermittent electrical and electronic issues.

• Diagnose 12V/24V DC and 120V/240V AC marine electrical systems.

• Diagnose charging, starting, battery, shore-power, inverter, charger, generator, and related systems.

• Diagnose and repair outboard engines and propulsion systems.

• Perform advanced engine rigging, installation, maintenance, and repair.

• Diagnose steering, trim, tilt, throttle, shift, and control systems.

• Install and troubleshoot marine electronics and NMEA 2000 networks.

• Perform electrical and systems installations, upgrades, and repairs.

• Conduct sea trials and on-water diagnostic testing when required.

• Perform commissioning, decommissioning, winterization, and seasonal service.

New & Used Boat Preparation

Our technicians work on both customer-owned boats and boats within our sales operation.

You will:

• Commission and prepare new boats for delivery.

• Perform pre-delivery inspections and quality-control checks.

• Diagnose and correct problems discovered during new-boat commissioning.

• Inspect and repair used boats being prepared for resale or trade.

• Assist management in identifying mechanical, electrical, and systems issues on prospective inventory.

• Help determine appropriate repair priorities and estimated labor requirements.

Technical Leadership

You will be one of the most experienced technical resources in our shop.

Responsibilities include:

• Helping other technicians diagnose difficult problems.

• Sharing knowledge and best practices with less experienced technicians.

• Assisting technicians with complex electrical, systems, and engine diagnostics.

• Reviewing difficult or unusual repairs when requested.

• Helping establish consistent standards for workmanship and quality.

• Staying current with manufacturer service information, technical bulletins, recalls, and new technology.

• Serving as a technical liaison between technicians, service personnel, management, manufacturers, and customers when appropriate.

This is not primarily a supervisory position. We are looking for someone who wants to remain a highly skilled, productive technician while naturally serving as a technical leader within the shop.

Preferred Certifications

We strongly value professional certifications and manufacturer training.

Preferred qualifications include:

• ABYC Marine Electrical Certification

• ABYC Marine Systems Certification

• ABYC Master Technician credentials, where applicable

• Mercury Marine certifications

• Yamaha Marine certifications

• Suzuki Marine certifications

We recognize that certifications alone do not make a great technician. Compensation and position level will also reflect demonstrated diagnostic ability, experience, workmanship, productivity, and problem-solving skills.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

• Significant professional marine repair experience.

• Advanced marine electrical and systems knowledge.

• Strong outboard engine diagnostic and repair experience.

• The ability to independently diagnose problems rather than relying on parts replacement.

• Experience reading wiring diagrams and manufacturer service documentation.

• Experience using professional diagnostic equipment and OEM diagnostic software.

• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

• High attention to detail and pride in workmanship.

• The ability to explain technical issues clearly to coworkers and customers.

• A willingness to help other technicians improve their skills.

• A professional attitude and strong work ethic.

• A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

The Right Person for This Job

We're looking for someone who can walk into a boat with a problem and figure out why it isn't working, rather than simply replacing components until the problem goes away.

You should be comfortable taking ownership of difficult repairs and saying, "I'll figure it out."

You should also be someone other technicians naturally turn to when they encounter a problem they haven't seen before.

We value technicians who:

• Diagnose before replacing parts.

• Follow proper testing procedures.

• Take pride in clean, professional installations.

• Understand that reliability matters just as much as getting the boat out the door.

• Know when to consult a service manual, technical bulletin, or manufacturer resource.

• Are willing to teach and share knowledge.

• Treat customer boats as if they were their own.

• Understand that quality workmanship protects both our customers and our reputation.

Compensation

$30–$45 per hour, depending on experience, certifications, technical proficiency, and demonstrated performance.

Candidates with advanced ABYC certifications and/or multiple OEM certifications may qualify toward the upper end of the compensation range.

Additional opportunities may be available for overtime, manufacturer training, and professional development.

Why Join Us?

We are a small, independent marine business, which means your contribution is visible and important.

You won't be lost in a large corporate organization. Experienced technicians have a direct opportunity to influence how our shop operates, help develop younger technicians, and play an important role in maintaining the quality and reputation of our business.

We have a diverse workload involving customer repairs, new-boat commissioning, used-boat reconditioning, rigging, diagnostics, and system installations, so no two days have to look exactly the same.

If you're an experienced marine technician who enjoys solving difficult problems and wants to be recognized as a technical leader, not just another person turning wrenches we'd like to talk with you.

To apply: Please submit your resume and a brief description of your marine experience, certifications, and the types of boats, engines, and systems you are most experienced with.
