What You’ll Do

The Vascular Access Registered Nurse (RN) is a clinical expert responsible for the assessment, insertion,
care, and management of vascular access devices for both inpatient and outpatient populations.
Practicing within the scope and standards established by the Ohio Board of Nursing, the Vascular Access
RN delivers high quality, evidence-based care for patients requiring peripherally inserted central
catheters (PICCs), midlines, extended dwell catheters, and peripheral IVs as ordered by the provider.
Utilizing current evidence-based guidelines, the Vascular Access RN collaborates with providers to select
the most appropriate vascular access device based on individual patient assessment, therapy needs,
vessel health, and clinical risk factors. This includes careful consideration of laboratory data,
contraindications, and overall goals of care to optimize outcomes and minimize complications.
Operating in alignment with High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles, the Vascular Access RN
fosters a culture of safety, mindfulness, and accountability. As an integral member of the
multidisciplinary team, the RN partners with providers and care team members to evaluate patient
responses, assess intervention effectiveness, and adjust care plans as needed. The RN also serves as a
consultative resource and mentor to patients, their support systems, and all members of the healthcare
team. Serving adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations with diverse and complex needs, the Vascular
